| Demodex Mange Hi everyone -- My husband and I have adopted a 4 month old female puppy who is currently having a breakout from demodex. The person I got her from couldn't handle taking care of her and we felt so sorry for her, so we decided to take her home with us. I know that its not contaigous and won't hurt my other Yorkie, but I want to know if anyone else has had experience with this? Through my short research I found that flare ups come from elevated stress levels, usually hormonal, so she will be spayed immediately after this flare up goes away. I got this stuff called Dermisil (I think) that you mix in with regular shampoo and bathe every 5 days and it says it guarantees that it won't come back. But since this is due to weakened immune system, it makes me believe that there is something I can add to her diet, or change her diet to something else to strengthen her immune system. If anyone has any words of wisdom I would certainly appreciate them!

| I dont believe it is a curable mange. I dogs suppressed immune system cant handle the demodemic mange mite. Vets usually use Mitaban and the dog will always have to go for frequent treatments. It may go away for a little while, but usually comes back. |

| Well I already knew that and was prepared for flare-ups to come back. However, it just so happens that the lady who does my nails bought Yorkies from some show breeder in Atlanta and all three of her puppies had it. They were all females, all had one flare-up and after she got them spayed never had it again. I know that that may not happen to my girl, but one could always wish. I just want to know if there are others who've been through the same ordeal and want to know what they've done

| Whether or not it comes back or not depends on many factors...such as the underlying problem of the original breakout...and why the immune system was / is diminished. Our Biewer Samira had Demodectic Mange when we got her (that was the reason she was placed with us btw). I worked closely with our vet to first get her spayed (not waiting until the flare-up was over) at 8 months-old. Then as soon as her incision was healed, we started the mitaban treatments at home every 7 days for 10 weeks. We also put her on an immuno-booster supliment that was meant for dogs with cancer. (http://www.b-naturals.com/product_in...products_id=24) She was very thin and had no appitite when she first came to us. Within 2 weeks her appitite came back and she had started gaining weight. The Mitaban dips were not as horrible as I had first thought they would be. I will say that because you don't rinse that out of the coat, she smelled like her fur had been torched. We had my MIL make her pajamas that she wore all the time. That kept her from itching the mange spot and keeping the mitaban on the body. Today she is happy, healthy and flare-up free. All of our girls are spayed so there aren't raging hormones in the house to get the stress racheted up...and cause more flares. There's a lot of mis-information out there that you have to sort through and a lot of people who have never dealt with it will try to tell you not to do mitaban....just "see if it will go away". That sometimes works...sometimes doesn't. Find a Vet you trust... follow their instructions to the "T"... I wish you good luck. If you have any questions...please feel free to pm me. There are some very specific things you will want to do during the dips...like the eye drops and making sure you get every part of the body covered...especially between the toes. ~Lorene

| We had a Shih-tzu that we rescued years ago that had this....and like you, we felt sorry for him, that is way we got him too. Anyway....the vet tried sooo many treatments...one was some sort of cattle treatment that was very potent. It was so many years ago...I am sorry I can not remember all the names of the meds the vet tried. I know one started w/ an "I". I believe he said this was passed from the mother. I had a lot of research on it at the time, but have since tossed it all (I guess). We put Buddy to sleep after two years............(he would have been 4)..... Not just because of the mange, but vairous other health issues this poor guy had. Good luck

| Charlie is a rescue pup (10 yo), and had demodex. From previous records, he had the mites when he was 4 and never treated. His previous owner for six months and her vet treated him for allergies with heavy doses of cortisone drugs. Cortisone is contraindicated for mites ie Prednisone. I gave Charlie "Invermectin" orally for the mites since I believe the dips involve the anatomy that should be protected. I placed him on a no-grain kibble (Orijen) and fish oil. Also, he had a thyroid test that revealed his count was '0' and should have been between 4-5. He had scrapings until the mites no longer revealed themselves as living. Your pup most likely had them passed from the mother, and you are correct that it is an immune deficiency. Good luck and there are excellent articles to read. My belief is all dips should be regarded as injurious to the pup. Warmly, Deborah
