| Recognizing Vision Problems I am by no means an expert but I have had quite a few people ask me how I noticed problems with Hallie's eyes which ultimately led to a diagnosis of retinal degeneration so I thought I would share my experience. 1. Her and Simon used to bark their crazy little heads off at the squirrels out my back doors and I started to notice that Hallie wouldn't bark with Simon, instead she would run away and try to hide. Now I know it's because she couldn't really see the squirrels like Simon can. 2. She wasn't as excited when I came through the door, it was like she didn't recognize me until I said something. Then she would do her happy dances and be happy. I have now started to talk to her A LOT so she knows my voice and that makes her happy. 3. I had a friend who hadn't seen her in awhile and Hallie didn't really recognize her until she smelled her. That friend actually asked about her vision (that was when I finally took her in). Now that she's been diagnosed I am really watching her to see how she changes and have noticed a few other things that are probably a result of her vision loss. She follows the wall down the hallway of my apartment, her night vision isn't very good and it takes her awhile to climb the steps into the bed. I don't want to scare anyone, I just wanted to share what happened with us in case anyone else that I haven't been PM'ing with was curious. Hallie, Simon and I are making little adjustments but we are very happy and will continue to have fun, exciting lives. We will just do some things a little different |

| I'm really sorry Hallie has this. I've lived with a Yorkie who lost her vision to complete blindness over a period of 10 years and she coped absolutely fine. Just remember to be considerate of where you leave things and she will adjust greatly.

| Chunk's vision A couple of months ago we noticed that our then 6 month old yorkie was having trouble with his eyesight. I would hold his toy to the side of his head and it seemed as if he could not see it unless the toy was directly in front of his eyes. We noticed that he is always running into things, such as the coffee table and chairs, etc. He has also developed a blue glow in his eyes. This can be seen both day and night. I took him to the vet and the vet said he can see just fine because his pupils reacted to the light of his flashlight just fine. He said he may have bad eyesight but he still could see. He also thought his poor sight was due to Chunk's clumsiness. He is a large yorkie, ( 12 pounds of pure love), and he is pretty clumsy. I do not agree with the vet's diagnosis. When we brought Chunk home at 8 weeks old he seemed to be able to see ok. I would appreciate your thoughts on this situation. Thanks, Chunk's mom |

| My 4 year old baby Frankie does not produce tears in his right eye. We went to an eye specialist recently and she flat out said that he would be blind in both eyes by the time he is 5. She was not sympathetic at all and I have not gone back since. She immediately wanted to do surgery to revert his saliva gland to his eye, which could or could not help with the dry eye from not producing tears. I thought I would try out a couple of new eye medicines first before rushing into a surgery. I have not noticed any problems with sight in his other eye, and maybe somewhat in his eye that does not have tears. I am not sure if this was a correct diagnosis. I am really hoping she is wrong, it was a really upsetting situation. Frankie has been managing well on his new eye meds for over a year now. Hopefully she was wrong and we can maintain his eye with what we are doing now. |

Banning Thread Dictator Donating Member | Thanks for passing that on. Those seem like good warning signs to look for. I hope Hallie's doing OK.

| I've had a few people ask about Hallie's vision lately so I thought I would update everyone. We are all doing ok! Hallie has her moments and daycare is becoming more of an issue. She gets a little snappy when startled and yesterday when I went to pick her up they brought her out and she ran up to the wrong people because she couldn't find me. I've also noticed that when we go for walks she panics if we go a different route. She still tackles Simon as often as she can and eats with her normal passion so I know she feels great. I've done a ton of research about PRA and it's a pain free condition so that makes me feel better. I can say that it's harder on me to watch her eye sight deteriorate than it is on her, she's still her usual spunky self |

| Thanks for the update on little Hallie! It is good to know she is her usual self. I so agree that it is much harder on us then them, you just want to take it away and make it all better. My Bichon has been totally blind now for quite some time, and he sometimes amazes me with his sense of smell and how he uses that to navigate. Big hugs to Hallie!!! YT Calender Cover Girl

| Thanks for the update. I have been wondering about Hallie. I am glad that she keeps Simon in his place. I am sure that it is harder on you than her, but with the help of her mom and brother, I am sure she will be fine.

| Update? [developed a blue glow in his eyes. This can be seen both day and night.] Hi there. Bells is my 2nd Yorkie (my first love past away at age 13 due to kidney disease), she is now 10 months old. My husband mentions how he thinks Bella has poor eyesight. & I have noticed the "blue" when there's bright lights like a camera flash. I am quite concerned. May I pls ask how your Yorkie is now? |
