| Question for all of you Nature's Variety Raw Feeders Hi! I have been doing a lot of research on feeding my two babies, Bella and Romeo a raw diet. I've read every thread I can find and every website that comes up on a google search, and I've decided it's the way I want to go. It seems that Bella only eats her kibble to stay alive. Yesterday I gave them some raw chicken wings, and they both ate them in no time! It was so nice to see Bella so excited about eating! Anyway, I want to put them on Nature's Variety premade Raw food. I don't feel like I can handle the prey model diet yet, even though I know they're missing out on the dental benefits. I'm going to pick some food up for them today, so my questions are as follows: 1. What Nature's Variety meats should I purchase first for them? 2. I have a Nature's Variety retailer very close to me that sells Nature's Variety raw bones (Raw Ham Bone, Raw Lamb Bone, Raw Beef Bone, Raw Bison Bones, Turkey Necks, and Split Beef Knuckles). Should I buy them? If so, which ones? Does the bone count as one of their meals? Do I weigh the bone and only give them their reccomended requirement (Bella eats 2 oz and Romeo eats 3 oz)? and lastly, how often would I give them a bone? I apologize for the long post, I just want to make sure I'm doing the right thing by my babies! Thank you all in advance and I can't wait to hear from you, Heidi |

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | Well, I can sure tell you read all the threads bc you're already well on your way! How great to hear how much Bella loved it, that's exciting. I use the medallions as well. I've heard beef can be tough for them at first, so you may want to avoid that. If they're not allergic to chicken (and it appears they're not ), you could get those. I started w/ venison (Marcel hated/Wy loved), rabbit (same), and lamb (both loved). I don't know if I'll ever try to get chicken back in Marcel's diet or not, we'll see. Beef, maybe. As for the bones, my vendor sells the NV bones as well - and they are HUGE - they look more like "wreck" bones than consumable bones. So, I'll be getting my bones from the grocery store. Lara recommended lamb chops to me to start with and they seem like a good size. I know a lot of people give the chicken bones, as you did. Well, the experts will chime in soon - so I'll leave my newbie comments at that...

| I am switching my little on to raw as well. He has never been a picky eater and loves his Royal Canin 33. I met Pat McKay who is sort of a pioneer in this area and bought some of her recipes. He would not touch it the first time when I gave him raw chicken on its own. Only after I mixed a good dose of dry to 1/4 raw he ate his food. I think it may be a little difficult to chew for him. He is only 3 1/2 months old. I guess it will have to be a slow transition. |

| Raw & Dry Kibble...am i over feeding? I just started my 3 month yorkie on Natures Variety. He is a very picky eater. I tried feeding him Orijen, Artemis, Eukanuba, etc. He did not eat the dry kibble unless he was very hungry or unless I hand fed him. The first time I gave him raw he ate it in seconds. I find it a lot easier to feed him raw. Now I am concerned with how much to feed him. I have the NV medallions. Since I work during the day...I feed him one in the morning, I leave 1/4 cup of dry kibble out (sometimes he eats it sometimes he doesn't), and then I feed him one medallion around 7 or 8pm. Am I over feeding him? |

| Thank you all so much for your helpful information. I am THRILLED to report that I started Bella and Romeo on the raw diet yesterday, and they loved it. Bella ate her chicken medallions lightning fast! It took Romeo a little bit (maybe 15 minutes) but he got the hang of it, and I have really enjoyed watching them eat, and neither one of them have had upset stomachs! They both love the chicken, whereas Bella doesn't care for the lamb as much, but she still ate it! Again, thank you so much for your help, and I can't wait to see the changes from feeding a raw diet! |

I haven't purchased the NV raw bones because they are just too big and she probably wouldn't touch them. When she gets RMBs its usually a chicken drumstick or turkey neck.

IMO, I don't believe in once a day feeding. Where have you read it's better?

| Well, I have a 2 lb pig on my hands....she has been eating 3 medallions a day but I am trying to cut her back to 2. Don't need her to be overweight and have all the health issues that go along with that. But have given her a heart or a bit of gizzard when she only gets 2 medallions...guess I am defeating the purpose.

| book There's a book called the Holistic Guide for a Healthy Dog by Wendy Volhard. I think it's very useful, there's alot of information in there on how to feed them raw meat and what kinda vitamins to use and stuff. Also teaches you how to start and what do you have to expect. |

| Oops I meant to say 1+1/2 medallions each time so 3 all together. Don't worry, I am not starving my dog. I give her treats here and there and 1 bully stick per day. Not sure if I should be feeding lunch. I used to feed him lunch when he used to eat dry food but he never ate too much of it. |

| Mine use the NV raw, too. They don't like the lamb but love the chicken and beef. I bought a couple of the bones once cause I had a coupon, but they didn't seem real thrilled with them and I think the bones are too big. Plus they made a mess on the carpet. We feed twice a day - once around 8-9 A.M. and then around 5 P.M. My dogs range from 6 months to two years. They get bully sticks and an occasional treat. I give them Yorkie Yummies at the grooming table so they will learn to like being there more. One of my two year olds has been eating NV raw since she was a puppy. (I got her at six months) She doesn't have health problems and is at the perfect weight for her size. I really like NV and will keep feeding it. Last edited by omega; 12-08-2007 at 07:41 AM. |
