| A few questions about Parvo As most everyone knows, Max had Parvo a couple weeks ago and thankfully recovered quickly and fully. I understand that Parvo is a virus. Is there more than one strain of it, like the human Flu virus? Can Max get Parvo again or is it a one time deal? As far as vaccines are concerned, is there any need for him to continue getting the Parvo vaccine?

| Yes, there are a few different strains of parvo. The only thing that seems to kill it is bleach or parvocides. It will be on your place for at least a year.Where ever you or the dog walked and whatever you or the dog touched will have the parvo virus on it. I would keep up with the parvo innoculations as he could get it again, just a different strain. You are very lucky that he made it through!! There is a strain of parvo that can kill in 24 hours. |

Phantom Queen Morrigan Donating Member | yes please continue with the puppy vaccines. i think you need to wait a little while after he recoops from parvo but then you can continue. THe vaccines are combo vaccines so he still needs them

| Are all dog vaccines sold as combos or can the individual types be purchased? I'm not nearly as knowledgable about dog vaccines as I am horse vaccines. With horses you can get most the different vaccines as a combo, or you can get them individually. I personally prefer to vaccinate with the separate ones, as opposed to the combos. (many different reasons for this but mainly because I was worried about vaccine reactions and if a combo was used, I wouldn't know which part was to blame) So does the Parvo vaccine contain the different strains of Parvo in it, or just a select few? I wonder if I could find all this info on Fort Dodge's website, or Intervet? I'm asking all this because I've lost a little faith in my vet and I don't like to put the total care of my pets in someone elses hands. I like to know enough to make intelligent decisions on my pets behalf.

| I buy my vaccines from Revival catalog. I cant remember if the parvo comes in a single dose or not or by itself. You might ask at your feed store that you but horse food at. Most of the time they have shots for dogs. |

Find a new vet, but your puppy does need to see one to get the rest of his combo boosters and to continue his evaluation after his parvo scare

| With my horses I do not give all the vaccines on the same day. That would defeat the purpose of giving the individual ones to watch for reactions. I space them out depending on the season (EEE-WEE-VEE and West Nile right before mesquito season, Flu/Rhino and Strangles in the Spring...etc). I don't plan on myself replacing the care my vet provides, but I do plan on being a little more informed than I have been. Edited to add: To answer my own question, I checked Intervets website and their Continuum vaccine line does have combos and individual vaccines. The Distemper and adenovirus are not offered separately but you can get just those two alone in a vaccine. Parvo, Rabies, etc all are offered individually, or in a combo.

Do you think your puppy got parvo as a reaction to the vaccine?

| I am so glad Max is alright, but never stop his parvo shots..so important to make sure these are done, and I do not let a puppy on strange ground until after all shots are done...I do not trust just after the first or second shot.. People think I am nuts..but I too had a yorkie with parvo..I was told buying her at 6 months she had all her shots and so she should have..two months later, she had parvo...i caught it right away and she lived..but it was a scary time for us.. |
