| I think the rate of growth varies for each dog. Bernie's hair grows MUCH faster than Kona's. I tend to get Kona groomed every other time that I take Bernie.

| Each yorkie is different. It depends on the texture of the coat. Soft Coated yorkies tend to grow faster. Silk coats, especially a slow growing silk take forever. Average for full coat is 2 years of age. It is also dependent on the care you take with the coats.

| You are quite right. A friend of mine has just obtained an international championship and national championship in Greece with silken textured dog . As you said this type of coats may take a lot of time to grow. Ella, my friend's girl was four when she finally made it. |

| It's very different in Europe...a dog isn't allowed to compete until 18 months of age. Here it is very different, 6 months of age is when some bring out a dog. Strictly for training, that is unless you have an exceptional pup that begins obtaining points at that age. If you begin pointing a pup it's usually done on structure, once they get a certain age and they are competing then the coat factors in.

| Hair Growth question Tilula will be 2 soon. She does not have the extremely long hair. I got her at 11months old & believe it may have been a diet issue. I use royal canine yorkshire which should help. I have started brushing her daily, do you think that helps stimulate growth? Could it be just bad genes? I have attached some pics. Any insight will be appreciated. |

| Share your secrets Thank you. I researched some on the net but didnt really find the answers I am looking for... Someone answered a lady having a similiar question on yahoo answers saying maybe its just a crap dog w/bad genes Which I guess maybe could be, but is a very rude way of saying it. Tilula is AKC, I know that doesnt always mean much with some of the breeders practices out there, I have heard some horror stories. Not from any breeder on yorkietalk or anything. I am just looking for some advice on stimulating hair growth. I think brushing daily will help & bathing more often, her diet is good but could something be added. Come on yorkie owners of the fab hair blessed share your secrets, there's room for more then one gorgeous yorkie in here. |

Good diet, clean coat are the answers to growing a good coat. Over brushing is not recommended. What your baby has is an extremely slow growing silk coat (what you're looking for), looking at her pictures, her coat is just where it should be.... She won't reach full coat until the age of 2. Environmental issues are also a contributing factor.......running on grass, laying on furniture, playing on carpet, etc. I wouldn't worry too much, just have patience.. Genetics have alot to do with it.

| Tilula is so adorable & smart. I see other yorkies that have champion blood lines & have this type of coat, it confuses me. I guess just once a day isnt over brushing, correct? |

1. Never brush a dry coat or dirty coat 2. Never comb a wet coat.

| Shampoo Can someone suggest a GOOD shampoo for my Yorkie? He is not a show dog, but I still want him to look his best! His coat appears a little dry to me......I also did not know to NOT brush him....he gets matted if I dont brush him...also, how often should I bathe him? |

| FlaLadee, your yorkie has a very similar coat to one of mine. I think the not brushing to often thing only applies to silky coats because other types tend to mat very easily. I have heard that mink sheen is very good but I can't get it as I live in the UK. I have tried endless different ones and find that pantene shampoo and conditioner work the best. I bath mine once a week. |

The opposite is true, silk coats do not mat as easily as soft coated dogs. I don't recommend Pantene, because of the polimars added to it over time it does more damage than good. The only Pantene shampoo I use is their clarifying shampoo.

| Interesting, my silky coated never mats, her hair is always knot free and in perfect condition. My soft coated however is a nightmare to keep up with. I don't use pantene at every bath for that exact reason. But there really is not a very good choice of shampoos for them over here and its the only one that i'm not dissapointed with. |
