| The failed Poop Patch!! So, I have been trying to grow out my little guys hair. Its very thin and fine and it can hold a lot of static after he's worn clothes so it fuzzes out everywhere A week ago, I had to re-trim around his bun hole because it had grown out and he got poo stuck to it. I trimmed a little wider than his tail, and the hair under his tail in hopes that it would be fine. Last night...the new poop patch failed big time. I had taken Ricky out of his clothes and brushed his hair and he was clean and fine. Shortly after, he was in his new dog house cleaning himself when I found a piece of poo on the floor. So...I go look at him in his house and his bottom and his little blanket was a mess. He had poop everywhere and his butt was soaking wet from the poor little guy trying to lick it off....it was so bad that at 1 am, I had to give him a butt bath and blow dry. So...my question is...what am I doing wrong?? It's getting into the long hair that's hanging down from his legs. I think it's because it's hanging down as he squats in the sit position. If I shave much more off back there, he's going to look like he's got a baboon butt... So for those that keep your pups in longer coats...how do you prevent that from happening??? |

| Poor Ricky. Teddy had a lot of booty washes his first couple of years with us. Part of it was that he was a nervous pooper. Secondly, when we took him places, he would get so excited that his stool was looser. I think it is less about the hair and trimming, and more about the stools and whether they are too wet. Also the behavior of the dog -- is Ricky in a hurry to run away from his poop and maybe doesn't squat long enough? That was part of Teddy's problem. The problem was made worse because Teddy was fearful of pooping and having problems that would require a booty wash. When things starting going right, he gained confidence, calmed down, and took his time to do his business. It does help to keep all of the hair on the back end, including tails and legs, combed. Tangles can interfere. You can band the hair on the back end. Just make sure that no hair pulls and that Ricky has full range of movement. I think Max has only had a problem once in his entire life with us. He knows how to squat and he stays until he finishes.

| You might be onto something. He often hurries when he's using his pee pads inside so nobody sees him and he will wait to do #2 until late at night and everyone is in bed. I think it's because he's sort of mixed up about going potty in the house since he's went both outside and on pee pads. Maybe I should try to move his pee pad into the guest bedroom where it's quiet so he can take his time if he needs it. Even outside, he sometimes is in too much of a hurry!! He poops and then bolts~~he runs to the end of his leash to get away from it like it's bad. I have no idea how to make him less nervous about going potty. I praise him when I see him use his potty pads and he's never been yelled at for pottying in the house...even when he's went on the floor. He'll stand there and watch me carpet clean!! LOL!! |

| Ricky sounds a lot like Teddy. He was originally 100% outdoor trained by his breeder and then I trained him to use pads too. He was so shy about pooping, and even outdoors on a leash, he was upset that he couldn't go do it in private. For the pads, he would always do it when no one was looking. The only advice I can offer is to keep up the praise, for pad and outdoors. We throw parties here and give kibble treats. I take care of the pads right away and Teddy happily walks by my to take care of them. It took a long time, but the constant reassurance finally had good results. Max has zero inhibition, so Teddy was a huge change for me.

| Mimi used to be in full length coat & her bum hairs would get urine stains on it but we never had tootsie roll problems bc her poopie is always firm. I used to spray CC Ice on Ice & The Stuff to repel the staining (which worked great), but it would smell after a day or 2. So I cut her bum hair, all the way down her legs too...you would think it would look weird bc she has floor length hair, but it didn't look funny. The sides were still left long & it kinda blended in. Maybe try trimming the back end?

| The type of food can really help/hurt. We had some treats that had rice in them, didn't bother the other two but you would think Ziva had eaten sticky crayons. Took a while to track down the cause... |

| I agree. It's probably the food along with his aversion to his own poop. Try changing gradually to other brands until you find the right combination. I have one pup that got spots on her skin and severe runny tummy off and on for months until I found what was best for her. She is also the one who goes behind the bushes or a big flower pot when she has to do her business. She prefers her privacy. Each one is different and you just have to find the right formula. Good luck |
