| Grooming Videos and/or Clippers? I am looking for recommendations on a good grooming video. Also can anybody recommend a good pair of clippers? I ran into a couple at the PetSmart in Virginia whose yorkie looked Great! I asked where they took them and they said they did him, themselves. They said the real key was to invest in a really good pair of clippers. I have heard that Oster is a really good brand. Riley just turned 6-months last week....He goes to get Neutered on Fri. the 12th [which I am a little nervous about....] and he is looking like it is just about time to start some grooming. I have trimmed him up a bit, a couple of times, myself.... but am going to look into investing in a good pair of clippers and see what I can do. I live in DC and it looks as though it is around $70 for grooming for a yorkie, around here. That is a bit steep if you ask me. |

| $70 is very steep! I only pay $35-40 if I take him in to the groomer. There is a mobile groomer that comes to the house for around $60-70 if I remember right. The lady that does it for $35 does an excellent job. She had him looking show ready when his hair was long, and when she recently cut him short,I think she did a great job at that too.

Clippers, invesg in a good pair Oster AG5, single speed, they are quieter and do not get hot as quick as others.

Phantom Queen Morrigan Donating Member | i like andis clippers. I have the 2 speed ultra edge and the 5 speed excel. I find them easier to work with then osters. you'll also need a few blades for certain areas. 10 for sanitary, 30 for pads and ears, and then longer length blades and combs if you plan on keeping him in a puppy cut or shave. i don't know about any videos on the web but i do know Jodi Murphy has some excellent DVDs as well as Jay Scruggs and Sue Zecco. they are professional groomers who put out training DVDs

| I groom and have used Andis. Not at all what I would recommend. Loud and the blades heat up very quickly.

Phantom Queen Morrigan Donating Member | Mary, have you tried the new andis excels? i love mine. much quieter then the other models, lighter, easier to hold, and mine is pink (lol). plus i find that they don't get as hot as quickly because you can use a lower speed setting most of the time. i also oil my blades like crazy and do not use cool lube so my blades run great and don't build up extra heat on small dogs. seriously these are so much nicer then the other andis models. i forgot my clippers one day and had to use my old ones and by dog two my hand and arm were killing me. i didn't realize the weigh difference between the two until i went to use the old ones again. you have got to try the new andis excel if you can. they are wonderful

I would recommend buying the video BEFORE buying any grooming tools. She has an introduction to all the grooming tools with recommendations of what to buy and what to avoid. She doesn't push specific brands of tools, just gives advice on what to look for in an electric clipper, shears, nail clippers, stuff for ear cleaning, blades needed, combs, etc.

with the amount of dogs and size of dogs that i do every day i can't use the osters. They are just too heavy for me, especially when i have doodles and S.Poos to groom. plus i find that the andis excel is quieter then most and new puppies take to it very well. these clippers can get through a matted coat easier and with a longer blade then a standard 2 speed clipper. my boss sometimes uses my clippers on matted messes when her's can't get through a coat. OH, LOL, you'll like this. the other day i was grooming a very large "SCW" and as i was doing his back pads he horse kicked my hand so hard, like an involuntary twitch, that my clippers flew 5 feet and hit the ground. that's never happened before so naturally i figured he broke them but nope, still good. i know someone else who drops his all the time and they are still going. lots of people use his clippers so they get a lot of abuse.

Where do you get your blades sharpened? I just ordered a set of Andis from PetEdge and haven't gotten this far yet. Something I didn't even consider. I've been read a lot in the grooming section and won't even attempt anything until I know more, but really interested in trying to groom some of the babies at home a little more because of the expense with taking all five and 1-2 fosters each trip. Our current groomer always researves herself just for us for the whole day when we bring our brood in! Seven is a lot to do (including the fosters)! and pricey!!! They currently go every 5-6 weeks.
