| ![]() I hope someone can explain to me how to trim or train Darwin's facial hair. The thing I loved about Yorkies was their expressive eyes but I'm not too sure if I should be trimming or training the hair. Darwin has a cotton coat and his hair is fairly slow growing. Does trimming bring on a lot of unnecessary work and would training hair save him from so much trimming. Can you tell I have no experience with Yorkies but I would love to learn to groom him myself. His body doesn't seem to be a problem but the eye area intimidates me. Thanks for any advice! ![]() Last edited by trin7; 02-23-2010 at 04:28 PM. |

| ![]() Darwin is so cute! If you want to grow his hair, when it gets longer, it will weigh down the hair & lie flat. Once you cut the hair between the eyes, it's very hard to grow out. *whisper ~ don't cut it!* ![]()

| ![]() I totally agree with Jenny...don't cut it. My groomer shaved my two between the eyes and on the nose and it has been such a pain letting it grow out. It will take a while for it to grow back out, but it is so worth it. I have been doing my own grooming since then. It is not that hard and the more you do it the easier it gets.

| ![]() Out of curiosity, why wouldn't you want between the eyes trimmed? Is this just if you're going for the traditional long coat or just a matter of opinion about what looks best? Or does this just apply to the cottony coated Yorkies? A short trim across the top of the muzzle and between the eyes seems to cut down so much on the eye-gunk, it would seem to be beneficial in some cases. Thanks!! -C

| ![]() It's a matter of personal choice. I asked the op if she wanted to grow his hair, then don't cut it. I have to keep Momo's hair between his eyes very short bc of his short muzzle. The hair will poke his eyes & irritate it causing eye gunk. So yes, it is beneficial in his case lol. It also cuts down on tearing which causes all sorts of problems, like musky smell & yeast.

| ![]() Aw, poor guy! I would take thinning shears to that. Don't have to shave it. Sometimes the hair can poke into the eyes. Not to mention booger central! He's cute though, he'll feel much better ![]()

| ![]() Hi - If I used trimming shears, wouldn't I have to keep trimming. I was thinking that if I let it grow out then I could just train it. I am very new to Yorkies and appreciate your help! Last edited by trin7; 02-26-2010 at 10:09 AM. |

It's really up to you. If you want to grow it, DON'T cut it. ![]() That period of growing it out is LONG & PAINFUL to watch (esp if patience is not a strong point, like in my case lol), but it's sooo worth it!

| ![]() I am so like you, just last night, I made my hubby hold Joey so I could cut around his eyes. During his first and only grooming, she cut a diamond going between his eyes and top of his nose,,,,,she also trimmed a sunvisor (only way I know to describe) across the top of his eyes. Joey is 14 months old now and it is just now long enough for me to pull up with a clip... So very slow growing.....I left the hair to about the middle of his eyes to pull up. I then trimed a slant from the top of his nose out under the gunky part of the eye... I haven't decided on what to do with the top of the nose, I need some type of cream to hold it down and let it continue to grow...and I don't know what to do around the mouth..Keep in mind my little Joey doesn't want to be touched other that his brushings....he's a drama queen....hopefully we both can learn from this post so thank you for starting it....if anyone has any up close photos of male face cuts, I think it could help us both.... Thanks Sharon |

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | ![]() I say to grow it out, and if you start combing the areas below his eyes into his mustache it will stay out of his eyes better. See picture:

| ![]() I say don't cut it, when the hair is pulled back in a top knot, the eyes look so beautiful! A topknot can be used with short or long hair. When Lex had odor coming from her eye goup/hair near eyes, I treated her eyes with an antibiotic ointment (sold at dr.fosters), she no longer has foul odor or much goup in her eyes/hair around eyes. Can't wait to see what you decide.
