| No, I would not go to petco. I had an older Cocker Spaniel and I never found a good grooming place until his last hair cut before he died. At least I have a good place for Scruffs now. Anyways, I took him to Petco and he was so terrified they shaved all his warts so they bled and it was a terrible job. Plus they left him with a moehawk. Every Petco is different though I'm sure there are some good groomers there. They are a good groomer if they give you the option to stay and watch, if they don't keep them in cages for drying and if they let them run around, and if the hair cut turns out good of course.

| I've had bad experiences with petco and petsmart grooming. I find that the smaller locally owned groomers will give you better service and get the job done right. I think they care about your pet a little more too! Good Luck! |

| Why not try grooming Munchie yourself? It will be a great bonding experience for the both of you. I don't think Uni would trust anyone but me to cut her nails, pick boogers out of her eyes, cut around her privates LOL

As a bonus, his nails grow super fast and his quick is really long, so I have to cut them 1-2 times a week and they are still too long!! If I cut any shorter than I do now I get the quick. FUN STUFF.

| Nails and Groomers For nail cutting, what we do is get a second person to help..... My boyfriend holds Dooie in his arms while he is sitting in a chair (to stay balanced). Boyfriend talks to him (saying good boy etc.) and holds his head gently but firm with Dooies face directed AWAY from me and the cutters. I then take his most exposed easy-to-get-at paw, and start one paw at a time, clipping carefully, then we take a little break for a tiny treat, then do it again. This routine runs quite smoothly for us. As for groomers, my experience is that Petsmart was very agressive and mean to Dooie, now he wont even walk into a pet store with me. He cry's and shakes and has total social anxiety. I really do think it's because of how rough they were to him. Never Again!!! What you can do is go online and Google search "dog groomers in Calgary" (you'll want to put your city name obviously) Start from the top and click on each website. Most places will have before and after pics of their work so it should give you a bit of an idea of what to expect from them. Another thing you can do is, if your in a park and see a really well groomed dog, even if it's not a Yorkie, walk up and ask the owner where they go. We LOVE talking about our babies, don't we? They wont mind sharing the secret..... Good luck. |

| Bad Service For Me With Petco.... I am one who have had a bad experience with "Petco". Having being new to looking for a groomer, I chose Petco. They've groomed my dog twice. They are very expensive and further more, they SHAVED my dog both times when I "specifically" asked for a trim. I'm currently looking for another groomer!

They are a good groomer if they give you the option to stay and watch, if they don't keep them in cages for drying and if they let them run around, and if the hair cut turns out good of course. ' I have to repsectfully disagree. I own a grooming shop and we do not let owners stay and watch, 99% of the time their dog gets VERy antsy and excited and tries to pull a few antics, knowing Mom is out there or watching. Makes our job 100% more difficult. I don't use cage dryers because I feel they take too long myself but cage dryers can be used safely if a dog is too scared of the hand held dryers, they are often the quiestest dryers, they also need to be monitered and only used with room temp air and for 15 mins at a time. I never even let dogs run around. For me this is a serious safety issue. I do not know what dogs will want to chew an electrical cord...it only takes one bite. My shop is very busy and I would be afraid of someone walking in with their dog and coming into contact with another. Of a little one trying to escape if the dog opened, plus I keep a super clean shop, every table, tub, kennel is scrubbed before dog goes in, out or on, dogs running around means me mopping the floor between every dog...not going to happen. Start by calling around, ask your vet, ask anyone you see walking their dog who looks like their dog got a nice haircut. Word of mouth is the best! Call the groomers in your book and talk with them. My shop is usually booked a month in advance, we take no biters or difficult dogs (we are so busy we have to be selective with who we groom), my groomers and myself are involved in continuing learning, we keep going to seminars and are training to compete at grooming next year. There are some top knotch groomers in Calgary (I think Jackie Boulton is from there, and she is one of the BEST in the world, no joke on that one). But like good hairdressers, majority of the time the best groomers are the most expensive and have the longest wait times to get in.
