'Every Petco is different though I'm sure there are some good groomers there. They are a good groomer if they give you the option to stay and watch, if they don't keep them in cages for drying and if they let them run around, and if the hair cut turns out good of course. '

I have to repsectfully disagree. I own a grooming shop and we do not let owners stay and watch, 99% of the time their dog gets VERy antsy and excited and tries to pull a few antics, knowing Mom is out there or watching. Makes our job 100% more difficult.
I don't use cage dryers because I feel they take too long myself but cage dryers can be used safely if a dog is too scared of the hand held dryers, they are often the quiestest dryers, they also need to be monitered and only used with room temp air and for 15 mins at a time. I never even let dogs run around. For me this is a serious safety issue. I do not know what dogs will want to chew an electrical cord...it only takes one bite. My shop is very busy and I would be afraid of someone walking in with their dog and coming into contact with another. Of a little one trying to escape if the dog opened, plus I keep a super clean shop, every table, tub, kennel is scrubbed before dog goes in, out or on, dogs running around means me mopping the floor between every dog...not going to happen.

Start by calling around, ask your vet, ask anyone you see walking their dog who looks like their dog got a nice haircut. Word of mouth is the best!
Call the groomers in your book and talk with them.

My shop is usually booked a month in advance, we take no biters or difficult dogs (we are so busy we have to be selective with who we groom), my groomers and myself are involved in continuing learning, we keep going to seminars and are training to compete at grooming next year.

There are some top knotch groomers in Calgary (I think Jackie Boulton is from there, and she is one of the BEST in the world, no joke on that one).

But like good hairdressers, majority of the time the best groomers are the most expensive and have the longest wait times to get in.
