For those of you who keep their yorkie's hair long

I had an appointment to groom Tucker last Thurs. (Some of you may remember my post) Anyway, I decided to cancel the appointment and leave his hair long, but I have a question. Do any of you have problems with their hair getiing urine in it? About 3-4 days after his bath, he starts to smell like urine. He doesn't lift his leg, he squats. So I'm wondering if this is a problem with girls too? Is this a problem for any of you? If so what do you do about it? I wouldn't mind bathing him every few days except that it isn't good for his skin. So what do you guys suggest?? Thanks

I think that it is mostly a boy thing, to prevent urine sticking to Copper's hair, I use the same clippers as I do on the tips of his ears, and I shave his belly in front of his boy parts. I leave all the hair arround the edge, or skirt. this way it can still look nice and long I also have puppy wipes that smell really good. I wipe his shaved belly and private area about once a day. He hardly ever needs a bath.

Thanks. I do have his belly and parts shaved like a skirt, but it still seems to get in his hair. I'll try the wipes too.

Well, this is a big problem for my little girl too. She's puppy pad trained & it seems to soak into the pad and onto her back legs. She squats really low. Her legs are very light colored. I've tried everything, but recently read about using Woolite. I was very apprehensive about trying, but it did seem to improve with helping to remove the stains, which other shampoos had not. Wish I had a solution about the problem itself.

My little girl has this problem but it takes a little longer. The hair on her butt and the inside of her legs gets long and starts to smell despite the fact that she nearly flattens herself to the ground everytime she pees. I try to aleve the situation by wiping her down... I am lucky though cause Sasha can handle a bath more often than most.

Yes, that's exactly how Bella does. I was wondering if this is as much of a problem for those who are not puppy pad trained??

Are you leaving a bit of hair (i leave about 1/2'') on the end of his winky when you groom him? It helps the urine go in one direction. My boy is in full coat, and he lifts his leg. I keep his belly shaved and in front of and behind his winky. So far no problem. I also had a male that squatted and I also kept his winky hair longer. I think I said winky 3 times in this post, LOL

Joeys breeder said that if you are growing a coat you need to keep the hair on the penis around 1 ½ - 2 inches long, this is called a "pee string" The pee string directs the urine away from the coat, and works whether they lift or squat. It need not be a lot of hair, but should have some length to it. This site has more information, on the pee string. Willow has the same problem. She also flattens herself on the pad until she is nearly touching. The pee gets on her tummy but also on her leg hair which is long. I was just "blotting" her after each pee but lately I have had to use baby wipes on her leg hair and little girl area to dry her and keep her from smelling. She gets a weekly bath but even with the wipes, near the end of the week, she is ready for that bath. The things we do for our babies!

I cut the hair at the end of her "little girl" to about 1/2 inch. I thought this would help. Are you saying it should be longer?

Joeys breeder was telling me about boy dogs, and I feel so stupid, but I don't know the first thing about girl dogs, so I can't say if it would work in the same way. Haven't had a girl dog since I was a little girl.

The hair at the end of a little boys parts is a pee string and needs to be longer to direct the urine. with Lolita I just take her in once a day to bathroom sink and wash her around that area and put a little lotion on her tummy. Oops edit time Nancy didn't read your post before I posted lol.

Like AprilLove & Nancy said...leaving that sprout of hair for the pee to go in one direction is helpful.

I have the same problem w/Mimi too. She squats way low & lifts one leg & while going...her lifted leg quivers...lol!
I've heard those sham wows absorb pee very quickly & doesn't get on the fur. I've yet to try it tho. Kinda not liking the idea of washing it all the time although we use the washable pads.

Jack is always peeing, even with his belly band. So I wash him everyday under neath. His privates his hair is long also

I just ordered some because my darling Phoebe has to sleep on my Pillow Shams above my head at night...and well, I don't care much for that fragrance to be wafting thru my dreams...kwim?

I've been sitting here trying to decide if girls and boys pee strings work the same way. LOL I think I'm spending way to much time on this. Hehe
BTW, me thinks it's time for you to get Joey a little sister. I only had males for years but haven't had one now for a long time. I have heard so much about Yorkies marking, I got scared so have two girls.
