| Andis clippers I am seriously thinking about grooming myself. With 2 it is going to get expensive to take them to the groomers. I am nervous about doing this but I really want to start saving money. It has cost me anywhere from $32 - $44 to have Hot Rod groomed. I can say that the last 2 times I was not thrilled about how his nails have been cut. The time before last when I went to pick him up he lunged at me and drew blood on my chest with 5 different scratches, his nails were so sharp! They right away took him back to get his nails filed down and then I had to bring him back the following week cause they were still sharp. The last time they weren't as sharp but they still need more filing. Do you think this is a good deal? It is for $49.99 at PPE pet supplies. Shipping is only 99 cents for this weekend. Thanks for your input.

| I don't really know which clippers you are referring to, but here's how I looked at it when I was first deciding what to do about grooming at home vs. the professionals. I thought I would buy a decent inexpensive pair rather than laying a ton of money on the table and finding I can't or hate clipping my own pup. I bought an Andis set from Petsmart for about $50, and figured, I'll give it a shot once and its like the money I would have spend on that trip to the groomer I spent on the clippers, so if I hated it, it wasn't any more money spent then if I had paid $50 for a bad cut. Turns out the clippers worked great, (I liked how they were more compact than other trimmers for my 4.9 lb furball) and now I only take her in to be professionally groomed once or twice a year for a special occasion. I don't even have any plans on upgrading or such, since this one meets all my needs. One thing that was recommended to me that I will pass on if you are new to clipping is to find a cordless model. This way you have one less thing to wrangle as you trim your pup. Here's a link to the one I picked up: Andis Power Trim Cordless Rechargeable Trimmer D-4 - Grooming - Dog - PetSmart Good luck, and let us know how it goes! |

| Thanks for the input. I hadn't seen this at Petsmart but I only glanced at the trimmers...before I had really considered doing it myself. I do like the idea of cordless. Will post pictures if I should decide to take the plunge!

| I hope you already do Sorry, I had to. I would def. get cordless clippers or clippers with a really long cord, I shaved Lilly a few months ago and it was so hard trying to keep the cord away from her while I was doing it. I don't have any other advice as I have no patience to groom Lilly but I want to wish you the best of luck, it'll save tons of money!

| [QUOTE=emilyann;2200484]I hope you already do Depends on the day and what I wake up to with the 2 little monsters! Thanks for the input. I enjoy combing and brushing them. Hot Rod has really calmed down a lot with being groomed. Maggie, just being 15 weeks old is starting to realize that it must be done everyday whether she cooperates or not. She is way more fluffy and curly than Hot Rod ever was. He has always had very straight and thin hair.

| Tried to groom myself too... I bought a basic set of Andis Clippers that were on sale at Petco thinking that I would save money by grooming myself... man is it hard! I couldn't even get the clippers anywhere close enough to Wall-E's body because he kept squirming away from me. How do you get them to hold still ? My husband had to pin him down so I could trim his belly area! |

| I groom all 3 of my furkids. I bought the $50 clipper from Petsmart and so far so good. I also bought a grooming table from ebay. I also bought a cart with wheels from Ross to keep all of their supplies in there and I wheel it next to me while I'm grooming. I say mself I do a pretty good job with them. Timmy is the only one that hates to be groomed but he knows he has to suck it up or mommy will not be to happy with him. During the winter I just maintain their coats but when summer comes they all get puppy cuts. |

YT Addict | I was thinking about getting some clippers and doing my babies myself. My hubby is saying that I will end up messing up and waisting hte money on the clippers. I do have a question. Baylee is 12 wks old. She has really thick black hair. Its getting kinda long. Long enough that when I run my fingers through it its about an inch past my fingers. She loves running around outside but gets hot pretty fast cause of her hair. So What is to short to trim her hair? Do you think iit's to late in the year to trim her down short? I just don't want to get her hair shorter and it not grow back befor it starts getting cold out.

Maggie's hair is thick and wavy. I think that I will just trim her for now, she is 15 1/2 weeks old. I think her breeder trimmed her hair around her face and feet already. I want to try and see how her grows before I really cut it back. It's going to be like watching water boil though...she still has her puppy hair.

| Go to Walmart... They have a really nice set made by Oster, That was the only kind we used @ the Vets I worked for. This pair has all the attachments, is quiet and has a case to store it in. It's $44.99. I did'nt think that was a bad price. It might even have an instruct cd on how to groom different breeds. I hope this helps... Baron's Mom

| Bo - my best suggestion would be to get a good quality set of clippers. Andis makes a quality product. We purchased the larger cordless set ($199) for trimming our horses faces and legs and the product was a workhorse (pardon the pun). We used those clippers for about 5 years during the time when we had the most horses here at the farm and were doing lots of pony parties and parades. I don't know anything about the particular set you are looking at, but I would recommend Andis. Also, a trick we learned the hard way - which you probably already know - NEVER EVER use your clippers on a dirty animal - it will dull your blades speedyquick. Good luck with grooming Hot Rod and Maggie Mae - can't wait to see pics. |

| Grooming Video Contact suencricket2 She puts out a DVD Video of grooming your yorkie at home and it is wonderful. I just rec'd mine, viewed it and can't wait for the weather to break to use some of her pointers. She uses 3 different models and they are just like normal acting, high strung yorkies that most of us deal with in the real world of yorkies. Very good for beginning to groom at home. Well worth the money plus she offers a discount for YT members. GO FOR IT!!! |
