Before I say my piece, let me just add all the disclaimers we've been advised would be in my best interest. I MEAN NO OFFENCE - THIS IS JUST MY HUMBLE OPINION - AND ALL CHARACTERS IN MY STORY ARE MADE UP AND NOT BASED ON AN ACTUAL INDIVIDUAL!
This is a Yorkie site, full of people who love and want the best for the breed and their pets. Knowing this one would expect that there would be a majority opinion about what is good, best and just.
Being from a Jewish family, with relatives who have first-hand accounts of the Holocaust, I often have thought of this comparison. I don't mean to sound harsh, but lets play extreme make believe...
What if this were a site for Holocaust survivors and the majority of the members came on because they either were Holocaust survivors or are decendents of Holocaust survivors. Most of these members would be of the same general mindset. Different backgrounds, different life experiences, but this one thing in common. They could disagree, debate, laugh, enjoy - but the underlying current would still be the same thing that brought them to the site for fellowship.
Then lets say an antisemetic Nazi (re-read disclaimer here) found the site and joined. Now it is this persons belief that there was nothing wrong with the way that Jewish people were treated during WWII or even that there was no such thing as a concentration camp. (Yes there are people that hold the belief that the images from concetration camps were created propoganda intented to harm Hitler's reputation.)
This member is well within their rights to state their opinion. Hey it's the Internet and anyone can post their opinion. We should just accept our differences and turn the other cheek, right.
But then this person gets all offended and feels persecuted because the majority of the people on the site don't agree. After all, this person just wanted to state their side of the story and all of a sudden the majority were ganging up on them. They were the victim of a mob mentality!! Heck, the majority should apologize for being closed minded!!
So thread after thread, post after post, this person is going to make it their mission to convert the majority to their way of thinking.
Now you have to consider the majority. They have the memories and the numbered tatoos on their arms, or they have sat at grandma's knees and heard the stories. So naturally they have some pretty strong opinions and feelings on the topic.
Do you think anyone would ever be able to change their mind? Do you think they would ever except the minority opinion with open arms and without argument? Do you think they would ever apologize to someone whose typed word was so hurtful?
In a perfect world maybe. In reality, I seriously doubt it...
(Now remember, we're playing extreme make believe but I just want to insert another disclaimer here.)
Now is the anti-semetic person doing this for the right reasons, or simply to stir up controversy? Surely there are other anti-semetics and Nazis out there with websites and blogs and chats where the majority is of the same opinion. Would it not be better for this person to join one of those sites or create their own? Would that not also be a way to get their point of view across??
I personally just have to wonder and question the integrity...
IF YOUR STILL WITH ME AFTER SUCH A LONG POST - PLEASE RE-READ THE DISCLAIMER AT THE TOP YET ANOTHER TIME. |
