Toby lost all his protein as well, but he blew up. He takes prednisone every day now and has mct oil mixed in his food as well. He's 16.5 and has been on this medication for at least 8 or so years. Is Lucy blowing up like a balloon?

| Low Protein levels My little guy Oscar has been at the emergency clinic for four days and $4900 so far, for very low levels of protein, (he also had fluid in the lungs). I found this site and think that you may be interested as it explains what may or may not be going on with your little one. Hope it helps and she turns out alright. | Let me help you with this. Toby has been living with this problem for around 7-8 years. He is turning 17 in October. First a few questions. Is Oscar blowing up and the vet having to drain him? Is he really lethargic? I posted before that you'll need to get prednisone, about 1/2 a pill every 2nd day. You'll need a body building oil called MCT oil. A capful mixed with food. You'll need either Medi-Cal or Royal Canin food. I will take around a week or so for him to get back to normal. Last edited by dcapper; 08-11-2008 at 12:01 PM. |

Protein If a blood protein level is low it needs to be built up, it can be assisted by giving the dog Iv fluids and giving them plasma protein. A small bag of this cost $273.00 - $300.00 but it helps them with building up their immune system. You might see symptoms of hypoglycemia with this also. I had the vet give it to my dog when his protein level was low. If it is low I can't see them wanting to do blood test so close together without telling you how to help build up the protein level. Was the dog vomiting blood or bloody diarrhea? If liver enzymes and BAT are normal then give the dog fluids to build up the protein before having another test done.

Avoid Lasix. My vet said that drug is very dangerous.

Thank you for your responses. Oscar just had a Endoscopy Biopsy and from what my wife told me it looks pretty good. Hi is being put on Prednisone and hopefully his protein levels will rise along with his mood. If all goes well we will pick him up tomorrow and he will be with us another 10 years. He will be 10 December 15. Thank you again for your thoughts, Mike

Oscar Unfortunately our almost 10 year old Oscar is very sick again. He has now had a second bout of severe vomiting. The first time we were able to rush him to the vet and he was given anti nausea medication as well as fluid injections and he was better in a few days. This time his vomit was filled with bloodamd mucus. He also was having blood in his stool (diarrhea)at the emergency clinic. He is presently on fluids and has not had any vomit or diarrhea since yesterday early afternoon. The vet has now said that this was probably caused by the Prednisone he was on for his Lymphantasia. He is going to start him on some solid foods today and try a different medication for his Lymphantasia. WE are very disappointed that the Prednisone did not work and would do anything to help our Oscar, so if anybody can provide us with any type of anternative that they have encountered please let me know. Thank you
