low protein levels? I'm worried sick about Lucy. I took Lucy to the vet on Friday September 21 to get her Acid Bile and her full-panel of bloodwork to make sure everything was okay with her spay. Well on Monday, while i was out of town for business, the vet calls my cellphone and tells me that Lucy's blood levels came back abnormal and that they showed she had Low Protein Levels. They asked me to get a urine sample and drop it off and also reschedule some of her blood tests (which I did, dropped her urine sample off on Friday the 28th and she is getting her blood work re-done on Wednesday). I have to call teh vet today to find out the results of her urine sample...but I am so worried, what does low protein levels mean? I know that high protein levels usually means liver issues, is it the same with low protein? They don't want to redo the acid bile test, apparently those numbers came back fine. ANy information would be great. Thanks |
anyone know anything about what low protein levels mean? |
no, i am sorry. i hope someone can help you out good luck to you |
How the heck do you get a urine sample? LOL I hope she's feeling better and the vet can help you out. |
I hope all is well and sorry I have no clue what low levels mean.... |
I know hight protien levels are usually liver problems. Ask your vet or one of the techs. I'm sure they could help you out. Let us know too. |
At the end of this very informative article is a contact number you can call and ask questions. http://www.b-naturals.com/Apr2003.php |
She may have PLE (protein losing enteropathy) and PLN (protein losing nephropathy). I'm so sorry to hear that your baby has low protein levels.. Here are a few links: http://www.upei.ca/cidd/Diseases/GI%...nteropathy.htm http://www.vin.com/proceedings/Proce...6588&O=Generic |
Thanks so much for all the info. I just talked with the vet and her urine sample showed no protein, which apparently is a good thing. As far as how did I go about collecting that sample, the vet suggested taking a butter tub and when she squatted to go to the bathroom outside in the morning to just wisk it under her...so that's what I did, it startled her at first but the second time it worked out and I was able to collect the sample. She's still scheduled for bloodwork on Wednesday morning and hopefully it will just show that the first time she had an off day or something. I just hope that it's nothign bad...i'm so worried. |
Great!! I'll pray for her :) |
This is great guide to understanding bloodwork. I printed off a copy and keep it on hand. I always ask for a copy of any bloodwork Lady has done and compare it to this chart. Sometimes it helps to understand what the vet told you. http://www.bichonfriseusa.com/caninebloodwork.htm |
Great link, Ladymom!! |
Well took Lucy back today for 2 more blood tests, a complete protein level and an albumin (or something like that) and hopefully those will come back with good results. Her urinalysis came back showing no protein...is that a good thing? Thanks in advance for your advice. By the way great links! |
Hi, my yorkie has PLE. shes losing protein through her intestines. It all started when i noticed she was bloated. My bf took her to the vet. They took some x rays. The dr. saw some white fuzzy stuff. He wanted a second opinion. The other dr. saw some fluids around her abdomin. They ran so many tests. They did a blood test, urine test and a ultra sound. I even had to do a fecal test. I had 3 test tubes. (one for each day) I had to take a sample of her 1st poo in the morning for 3 days. Once i collected a small sample each morning- i had to freeze it immediately. (even the drive to the vet, the poo has to be frozen- so i stuck it in a container w/ice in it) if it were to defrost..then the samples are no good. The dr. came to a conclusion that she has PLE. Her albumin was dangerously low. it was like at 2.0. She is now on a strict special diet. Prescription Hills Z/D. She is also taking predisone every other day. Every 6 months or so i have to bring her back for a blood test. So far so good. |
