I surely hope your babies are feeling better ... that Hydromet will knock them out for sure but it does suppress the cough and therefore the stress.

Default canidae and raw food

today i visited Pet supplies plus and spoke to someone thier who also had info on the raw food and canidae. She gave me a sample of the raw and i purchased a small bag of the canidae (all stages food). Sadie (my other yorkie has her dental appt this friday. well this past w/end she had her annual exam and we discovered in her labs/blood work that her kidney, bunn, liver and thyroid counts were slightly off. well she didn't know that we have been feeding her the same nf kidney food that Samie (the one that has scooting problems) has been on. I talked to one of the techs and she agreed that YES- her numbers would be "off" if she is eating a food that has no benefit to her as she is not the one that has kidney issues. and i am still not convinced my little samie has kidney problems just yet. she goes to the new vet this w.end and i am very nervous about that.

so i come home this evening and give them both a few pieces of the canidae kibble and they loved it! so my husband and i think we should start the switch.. slowly of course. i can't wait for them to try the raw food. it's defrosting in the fridge overnite for now. i thought about defrosting it a little bit in the microwave but not sure about that. but if i did that it would be just so that they could have a super tiny taste only for now. i don't want to do the old switchero too fast on them. if you in fact have pointers on doing the switch and about how many days/wks we should spend mixing the old with the new... i am interested in what you think is best.

this all is starting to make more sense with samie because i think back to february when we switched her to the kidney formula. she started scooting every week. i would have never suspected anything in her diet? but this is the only food she gets... no table scraps of any kind... just the NF food only. i also noticed that she has been scooting sometimes after she eats and also after she goes #2. then what she does is she sits on her hind end very abruptly as if to be in some sort of discomfort. and she just sits there. well we all along thought it was her anal glands. it still very well can be. but i ALSO think this food is irritating her in some way. definitely.

i have watched this dog and been very observant with her behavior over the past 6 mos very closely monitoring every thing she does out of the ordinary... . I also think that the long hair around her vaginal area i think gets too long and with if that is staying wet and i am not bathing her ofter like rinsing her private part only... she is staying wet and forming bacteria. ?? i don't know. i have cut it short. not shaved... just shorter and that seems to bother her more so that was the reason why i decided to leave it alone and just bathe them once a month. but i think if we are goign to do that we need to bathe more frequently. not necessarily a whole bath. but a good rinsing of her privates with a light washing. i know one thing for sure... i am READY to get to the bottom of this.

i am scared because the last time we tried to switch vets we had a bad experience. the place was brand new and the doors had not even been open long at all. it was the vet and the receptionist... and the vet handled the situation all wrong. she gave samie something to calm her and it made her so stuffed up.. in addtion to her trachea issues that were happening all at the same time. she turned blue and i they told me to get her home as fast as possible. i don't know how she survived though that.

i have to have faith in this new vet saturday and hope all goes well. today i faxed them 15 pgs of history and documentation.. urinalys readings and current meds so that they have as much info as possible. we also are scheduled for the first appt and are going to call the vet once we get in the parking lot so they can be ready quick for us. scary...
it sure has taken the heat off of me worrying about sadie's dental appt friday that's for sure :-)

this is a funny one for ya... last night i was drying my hair in the bathroom and i must have knocked my husbands toothbrush onto the floor. well i didn't know this but sadie got a hold of it and chewed the heck out of it. (i guess she was trying to get out of having her dental this friday :-) ha ha...
it did make her sick too though. i came home to a mess this evening. she is running around and feeling fine but the vet told me today that she is positive the floride or residue she ate off of the toothbrush upset her stomach. but she said she will be fine. i tell ya....i can't handle much more :-)

i wanted to give you an update on the food and where we are at with this all. i will keep you posted :-)

I want to give you some friendly advice about Raw food and Canidae (I like them both).

Never mix Raw food and kibble. They must be feed apart. You can feed a piece of raw and then put kibble down later.

With the raw food, it is not a good idea to defrost the whole bag. All you have to do is take out the pieces you need for the next day and place them in a baggie and into the fridge. Put the remaining bag back in the freezer.
Mine happen to like it more frozen, plus it really cleans their teeth b/c they are forced to chew it. So I take the pieces out of the freezer just before feeding time. I let them sit in a small baggie on the granite counter top for about 5 mins. Enough time to thaw a bit so I can get a knife through it and cut it up into tiny pieces.

If they LOVE the Canidae...They are going to go CRAZY for the Raw!

Best of Luck

this evening i mixed about 3/4 or more of the old and 1/4 of the new. they were picking out only the new but they did finish all of thier food even the old. i fed them shortly after just like 2 pea sizes of the raw. I didn't know not to feed it so close together. do you happen to know why you can't feed both at the same time? Not that i would mix it in their food or anything.

i may just end up feeding the raw only as a snack but YES they loved it big time!!! tonight i gave them the small amount of the raw with their pills in it. samie is on her allergy med -chlorphamine and sadie on hydroyzine 10 mg. her skin was really pink last week and she was itching so bad it was driving me crazy watching her. she was miserable. so the vet gave her the hydrozine for 10 days. samie usually waits for sadie to finish eating before she will go over and eat what sadie left her in the bowl (even though i put out food in two dishes) but this time they each were eating at the same time. it was really funny watching them! so cute!! :-) (of course only yorkie owners can experience this) the way samie was watching sadie eat was cute. she never even goes near the food bowl when sadie is eating first. so yeah they LOVED IT! and Samie didn't scoot after eating either this time. She looked like she wanted to....... for a few seconds, but she didn't. and I don't think she has yet tonight. She immediately would sometimes scoot right after eating. I hope she doesn't have anything major going on with her.

I really think she was having a hard time digesting her NF kidney formula and ALSO having irritations in her bowels from it. because she also sometimes will scoot after going #2 also.

poor thing!! i am hoping the new vet figures out what is wrong with her.

I appreciate ANY................... advice you have!!!
YOU have been so HELPFUL!!! :-) xxxxxx...

Dogs can digest raw food very fast. It move quick through the whole digestion chain of events.

But kibble is harder to digest and can stay in their tummies longer. If raw and kibble are eaten together, they will mix and bind together and hang out in their tummies longer, thus bacteria can grow quicker.

Did that make sense?

what i have is the medallions. beef flavor.. and i have one defrosting in the fridge. I plan on giving them approximately 1 small ball of it. like not even the size of a dime. and then how do you think before feeding the kibble?

I leave the house in the morning around 7am and i get home at 6pm. if i gave them a piece at 6:00 pm that would be tough to hold off for a while as they look for their kibble right when i get home. and it worked out well using it to stuff their pills in it when i got home. it was a super super small piece. enough to cover the pill and that's all.

i have no other way to give them their pills because i was using the canned kidney nf food for that. but i am done with that. not unless the vet this w.end tells me to put her back on it.

P.S. What kind of Raw Food is it?

Is it Nature's Variety??? If so, go to the link below.
This will tell you how much should be feed a day according to their weight and activity level. They can gain weight fast on Raw food - if you feed too much of it.

I feed 1 medalion for the AM feeding (about 7 am)

I leave about 20 pieces of Canidae out during the day, but no one touches it.

I feed 1 medalion for the PM feeding (about 7 pm)

And they get some treats too!

I lost my reply and for some reason i could not access the site until now.

yes it is natures variety. the person at the store told me that i could feed the raw food as a supplement. Not too sure what she meant by that though?

samie ended up having only one scoot tonight. something in this food i think helped her. I believe she didn't scoot as bad because she didn't eat "as much" of the kidney formula food as before. she loves the new food!!! and they LOVE the raw. I checked out the website and it was very helpful.
I really want to start of slowly i think. and i want to talk to the vet too. The vet techs i talked to about the raw food were like nooooooooo don't do the raw food... but i don't think they know much about it. i believe that is a question for the vet this sat. the reason i changed the food before her appt is because she is hungry and she wants to eat. i can't stand watching her anymore gobbling her food and then being so uncomfortable afterwards. it scares me because i was never aware of the scooting after eating up unti a few wks ago.

tomorrow morning i will give them their meds with the raw. super tiny pea size maybe dime size amount. i know they will not eat food during the day either but because they love this new food they just might.. so maybe i won't leave any out. i will feed dry when i get home and then 2 hrs or so later i will give them their meds.

i just finished cleaning up vomit because sadie-our other yorkie apparently ate a lot of "june bugs" last night. they were in her vomit and it totally grossed me out. i don't know what to do about them eating these bugs. i literally have started following them around outside because i don't want them eating these.

i will let you know how tomorrow goes :-) have a good night- i am off to sleep-

switching food is a 5-7 day process. You are best to heat water in microwave and then put food in plastic bag and defrost when doing raw - I did this for a while with natures variety

Every vet, dermatologist, internal medicine doctor and some holistic vets are against raw food but whole dog journal, animal wellness and dr. pitcairn say it is best except if a dog has a low immune system which can cause them to get sick due to bacteria. They have a smaller digestive tract than us so they can eat raw. They poop less as their bodies absorb all the nutrients. There is a lot that makes sense about raw and i did it for 3 months but the vets scared me about it so i stopped

A lot of vets don't recommend it, but that's because they aren't taught much about nutrition in vet school. Companies like Hills (science diet) teach the nutrition classes and tell them their food is the best, donate a lot of money to vet schools and associations, give away freebies to vets selling their food, and offer greatly discounted rates to vet students. I'm starting vet school in the fall and could get 80% off Hills and Purina foods is I wanted to.

I feed Lacy Nature's Variety Raw (Venison and Rabbit). She's eaten it for a year and has done GREAT on it. I recommend doing raw only. But I do know some people that do some kibble and some raw. If you go to Nature's Variety's website they have a "How much to feed" section. You can put in your pet's weight and activity level to find out how much you should feed. This is trial by error though...at first I put Lacy's activity as moderate when it should have been higher so I wasn't feeding her enough at first. But I quickly learned the right amount to feed. If you want to do some raw and some kibble, you can put what percentage of each you want to feed and it will tell you how much to feed. So like if you do 50% of each they might tell you 1 medallion and 1/4cup kibble a day. A lot of people do a meal of one in the morning and a meal of the other in the evening if they do a combo. Like I said though, I would just make the switch to raw. What I do with the medallion before I feed it is tear it into smaller pieces so Lacy can eat it easier. Glad to see you trying something other than the Hill's prescription diet
