| Tracheobronchitis/Kennel Cough What's everyone's experience with this? Does it really last 2-3 weeks? My Chewie started coughing over the weekend. I thought it was reverse sneezing after seeing a cat but his coughing episode didn't stop. Took him to the vet Mon and got antibiotics & a cough suppressant. The vet said his lungs/heart sounded good but his lymph nodes were swollen. The cough medicine works but Chewie is like s zombie and not hungry when he's on it. When it wears off he gobbles up food and then starts coughing constantly. Nights are the worst. I haven't slept normally in over a week now. Is this just the way things go or should we go back to the vet??? I feel terrible drugging him up but if I don't he coughs non-stop. Starting to get a little frustrated. 😞😞😞😞 |

| Bronchitis can definitely last weeks or longer. When one of my poodles had a bad case of bronchitis a few years ago, my vet finally prescribed her an inhaler to get her over the hump. Your pup does need a lot of rest while healing, but if you are concerned about the sedating effect of the cough meds you could try giving a half dose. It might help the cough without knocking her out quite so much. Diana |

| It's just crazy. When he's not on his cough syrup it's non-stop coughing. I've had absolutely zero sleep this week. We're supposed to go back to the vet on Monday if he's not better. |

| What kind of cough syrup ? IMHO cough syrup should not be used with bronchitis as just with people they need to cough to get the gunk out & if you suppress the cough that can lead to pneumonia. IMHO Mucinex would be a better choice as it thins the phlegm so they can cough it out easier witch in turn helps alleviate a lot of the coughing. I would ask your vet about the Mucinex. |

| He's on doxycycline and torbuterol. The smaller dose does make him less zombie like but his cough comes back faster. I agree about the mucinex idea. Once Chew starts coughing it's like he doesn't know how to stop. |

YT 500 Club Member | How old is he? Cough can be a number of things. Kennel Cough. Collapse Trachea. Heart Problems of Tonsilitis. I am thinking whereas his lympnodes are swollen it is due to an infection. Is he on prednisone? That helps with coughing too. Has he ever coughed in the past? | He's 8. He's always done the reverse sneezing thing but that lasts for one or two sneezes and then it's over. He's been coughing for 12 days straight now. We're going back to the Dr today for X-rays. No prednisone. Just the doxycycline and turbogesic. |

YT 500 Club Member | Have them check his heart. Also could be kennel cough but he needs a different Antibiotic. Sometimes the antibiotic they give him does not work. I would think if Collapse Trachea he would of had symptoms of coughing way before 8 years old I had a dog with it and he coughed since he was a puppy. Also could be tonsilities, Make sure they check his throat. Good luck and keep us updated. |

| At his first appointment the vet listened to his lungs and his heart and said they sounded great???? Ugh I'm just so frustrated and tired. I haven't slept normally in a long time. I feel so helpless. |

You could ask the vet about hycodan for his cough. But... my suggestion is to call the vet and ask him...not us. No disrespect to anyone, but none of us are vets and should be prescribing meds. Yes, kennel cough can be very annoying..and last for some time.

| Got his x-rays and his trachea/heart looks good, THANK GOD!! It's just a case of severe bronchitis. The Dr. added prednisone to the RX and said we could give the cough syrup every 4-6 hours instead of 8 since he starts coughing before the 8 hours is up. |

I was simply saying that no one should be giving veterinary advice such as what meds to give your pup! Perhaps it is better for people to say what worked for them...NOT what your pup should be given. Sure...you have been going to your vet, but sadly there are many people who would read some of these comments on this thread and give things to their pup WITHOUT consulting with a vet.
