| what a night we just had... miko threw up yesterday morning at 8am and then again at 9 am. of course, we didn't think anything of it (just pitied her). then last night she threw up again around 1am, 3 times in a row. first time was bile (what it normally is) second time was like a toothpaste tube---so weird! i had given her plain rice early in the day since her stomach was upset and it was as if the rice had congealed in her stomach and it just all came up at once, like a cat's hairball. third time was mostly bile again, a little more foamy with little specks of blood in it...the size of a period (only a few specks, but we were starting to worry a bit more) i called a nearby emergency vet (we've never been to before) to ask if they thought we should bring her in. they said if she was dehydrated to bring her in. we pinched the skin on her neck and it was sticking a little so we decided to take their advice. we didn't even get to meet the vet before she examined her. the assistant took miko in the back to their exam room. a few minutes later we heard a yip! from her and then a couple minutes after that we heard her scream. several minutes later, the assistant comes back in and my husband asked "is there any reason you couldn't examine her here with us?" and the assistant gave the excuse that they couldn't because the scale was in the back. now of course we understand how the scale works, but couldn't the assistant have weighed her and then brought her back? then the vet could see her in the room with us? i checked her backside this morning and she has a little cut!! i know it wasn't there before because we have to check her backside every time she has a bm (make sure nothing stuck to her) anyway, a while later they brought her back and she seemed ok...a little freaked out but ok. i think they just weren't comforting her at all when they took her vitals and i think they just held her down without trying to get her cooperation. she has never ever yipped or screamed at our vet's. so after they brought her back in we waited and waited for the vet to come. finally she did and she starts talking about different catastrophes that this could be. she told us her vitals were ok and that she really wasn't dehydrated. her temperature was a little high (103.6) but that things seemed pretty normal. but with regard to the vomiting, she said it could be hemorrhaghic gastroenteritis, obstruction, and on and on. at this point my husband and i are feeling uncomfortable and like we need to get miko out of there. the whole time the vet was in the room with us, she never once interacted with miko. we found that strange too. perhaps we're overreacting but it seemed that this vet came in and said "everything looks pretty good but your dog might be DYING! let us do these expensive tests even though your vet opens in 7 hours! anyway, we won't be going back there again. we all went to bed around 3:30 and she curled up in her little bed instead of snuggling with us like she normally does. at 5:30 she woke up heaving and she threw up a little bile, then she did this again at 6:30. we called our reg vet this morning and they told us what to watch for but that she should be able to deal with it on her own. if she's not better by tomorrow morning, we can call the vet to get in with them. anyway, thanks for reading my rant this far. |

| I'm so sorry you had a terrible night. A few months ago all three of my babies were vomitting and then the ugly D. started. This went on for 10 days with them. I was going nuts. Thank goodness nothing serious was wrong and it pretty much was a virus that they passed on to each other. I hope your baby is ok and feels better real soon.

| Oh my! Talk about making a stressful situation even more stressful. They were definately using the fear factor to get more money. . . very sad. I hope Miko gets to feeling better really soon. Poor baby.

| and i am silly and forgot.... in the haste of my ranting i forgot to ask the most important thing! does anyone have any ideas as to why she'd be throwing up like this? she hasn't really been lethargic....tired, but still alert. while we're taking the wait and see approach, i'm still worried we know she didn't get into anything because we watch her so closely. she ate some of the cat's food yesterday but not that much before we intervened. any thoughts? |

Yorkie Kisses are the Best! Donating Member | That doesn't sound good to me that she's so lethargic and can you see your regular vet today ?? That's what I would do especially if she's very young and small - GOOD LUCK to you...I hope it's nothing serious but it may be a good idea to get some basic bloodwork run....and something for her poor tummy |

| thanks so much i really appreciate the support. you know, if she weren't 4.1 lbs, i might not worry so much. it's just so easy for them to get dehydrated or hypoglycemic. i guess all we can do is keep a close eye on her. she took a drink a few minutes ago so we'll see if she can keep that down. if she can, i'll give her some rice in just a bit. by the way, i'm typing this on my laptop while i lay on the floor. she's sleeping in between my knees with her head resting on my leg. so sweet and pathetic |

| thanks red i wouldn't say she's lethargic, just exhausted from the late night. if she continues to have trouble today, we'll take her in tomorrow morning (they have sunday hours!!!) to get some tummy meds and maybe some blood work too. i say she's not lethargic because she'll still bark if she hears a neighbor come home (we're in an apartment) and she's able to get around ok. also, she still wants to chase the cat (just not as vigorously) i'm torn though because i know i tend to overreact and over-worry. i'm trying to trust our vets advice that we can take the wait and see approach and not put her in danger. so far, it's been 5.5 hours since she threw up. that's pretty good, right? |

| Throwing up !! Bogey went through a couple of days of throwing up & diahreaa a couple of weeks ago.I called the vet after the long night & he said it could be due to a lot of things( he had just had his shots 2 days before & I had a virus the day before). He said the main thing is that you want him to stop. Take his food away from him for 12-18 hrs. Give him pediatric imodium & start back with cereal baby food or rice. It worked! He loved the baby food & the vomiting & diahreaa got better.

| Oh good, sounds like she's over the worst of it. Poor little things must've just had a bad tummy ache Keeping her food bland for a couple days should hopefully calm things down.

| an update miko hasn't thrown up since yesterday morning still! i tried your suggestion of giving baby cereal so we picked up baby rice and baby oatmeal, as well as 2 jars of baby food that will have more flavor. fed her several tbls of the plain oatmeal last night and she ate it over a few hours and she loves it! she just licked and licked and licked....she was a very happy girl. if she keeps it all down today (going to give her the same thing) then tonight i will give her some of the jar food. we got chicken and rice and lamb and gravy. thanks everyone. i think miko's on the mend!! |

| Oh boy, what an ordeal you have had with poor little Miko. I am so very sorry. It is GREAT to hear that she is able to eat a little and keep it down. Maybe she just ate something that upset her sweet little tummy. |

Donating YT 30K Club Member | Glad he is doing better. Cali throws up if she goes more than 9 hours without eating and she is 2 years old and 5 lbs. SO I fed her 3 times a day.

| Truffles had this happen to him a few months ago. I recommend Pedialyte in replacement of water. It works for babies that have the same problem. I usually keep one unopened bottle at home just in case of emergencies. My breeder mentioned it to me when I first got him just in case anything were to happen. I had tried to ease him into new food at the time and I don't think his stomach took it too well. |
