YT 500 Club Member | the same.. except my brother forgot to mix science diet with the wellness and just gave him wellness so we had some softer poops so hopefully that passes soon. I have been giving him the panacur and then yogurt right away after so it seems that he is doing better with taking the meds as wild as can be.. running around everyone like a mad dog. I wipe him with baby wipes after each time that he goes.. just to make sure he is not reinfecting himself lol.

| I hope your pups are fine and you give your vet the what for!!! Many vets out there just don't understand that tiny dogs are not like other dogs. They can't just not eat and go for hours without hydration!! For future reference, please have some Pedialyte on hand. When they won't drink and are vomiting, use a syringe to give them 2cc's at a time about every hour. This will help, but will not ultimately prevent dehydration. I would also begin feeding yogurt with live, active cultures daily - not alot - like a tsp or two. This will help get the health bacteria back and will help to keep tummies calm. Keepng canned pumpking on hand for diarrhea and constipation is also very helpful and they usually like it so much they will eat this when they won't eat other things. Dougle-check your prescription of whatever meds you are given. Call a pharmacy if necessary and tell them it is for a 2lb dog. It is also easy to overdose a small pup on these meds. If you don't see an improvement within a day, go somewhere else. Pancur totally did not work for us so with our last bout of giardia the vet went right to Metronidazole and we had negative results at the end of the month!! Please be aware that giardia can cause your pup to become anorexic as well. So if she continues to not eat, you'll need to try whatever you can to get her to eat something. The first time Sissy had giardia, she stopped eating her kibble all-together and I spent lots of $ in a quick timeframe trying any kind of kibble I could (to no avail). That is how we ended up home cooking and I've just kept it up. I am convinced she is much healthier with her daily yogurt and home cooking along with Missing Link and although she contracted giardia again, we were able to get rid of it quickly. My vet explained that because the winter was so mild in most parts of the US, these parasites didn't die off like they usually do in the winter and they are seeing a tremendous number of cases really early. It might not have come from the breeder. Birds are carriers and it develops when the cysts are ingested/inhaled. Bird poop is everywhere and these cysts can live for a long time on dried out bird poop that just looks like chalk. If you have rain for a couple days in a row, chances are any wet spots will contain cysts as well. Believe me - we've become very diligent about keeping baby wipes everywhere. Feet get wiped every time they come in from outside and bums get wiped as well. Please update when you can.

| They kept her... I just got back from the vet. They kept Gemma for all kinds of tests and to start her on fluids asap. I was bawling and I'm sad. They don't think it is from the giardia though?? They say they have never seen a pup look the way Gemma does, just from giardia...So they are doing blood work, xrays, etc...and keeping her for at least 24 hours till she peps up. An estimated $700 - Truffles was injected under the skin with something to hydrate her and the option was thrown out there to also have blood work and xrays but at this time, I declined. I brought her home and coaxed her to eat baby hotdogs, and she did. Then she was eating the brown rice and chicken mix I put down for her She had not thrown up for about 24 hours so I am not as concerned with her right now-especially since she has just eaten! Thank God. This dr agreed that ALL my dogs should be and will be treated for the giardia as soon as they are stable and keeping foods down. Dr will call me in an hour with an update on Gemma.... thanks everyone for your thoughts and advice. I am so upset with all this!

Prayers going out to little Gemma!! Please do not wait to treat for the Giardia until they are keeping foods down. It can continue to multiply. Start treating asap and ask him for liquid Metronidazole. Usually the pharmacy will have to make it up. As it is liquid, it will also help somewhat with dehydration. Starting on yogurt in small amounts will also help the tummy. Good luck and please keep us posted.

I will also be at the store to make sure I have some of the things you list-yogurt and pedialyte! And what about the pumpkin? It is used for either, diahrrea or constapation? Is is ok to give regularly or only when needed for one of these symptoms?

Pumpkin is used for both diarrhea and constipation. I occasionally give it as a treat as the girls love it. I read a thread somewhere where someone froze it into mini ice cubes and gave it as a treat also. My girls really love their yogurt. I use Stoneyfield Organic as it has 6 live, active cultures. I try to find the low-fat version and plain, but they occasionally will get vanilla and full-fat as well. It has the highest number of live active cultures than any other brand I've found.
