I hope your pups are fine and you give your vet the what for!!! Many vets out there just don't understand that tiny dogs are not like other dogs. They can't just not eat and go for hours without hydration!!
For future reference, please have some Pedialyte on hand. When they won't drink and are vomiting, use a syringe to give them 2cc's at a time about every hour. This will help, but will not ultimately prevent dehydration. I would also begin feeding yogurt with live, active cultures daily - not alot - like a tsp or two. This will help get the health bacteria back and will help to keep tummies calm. Keepng canned pumpking on hand for diarrhea and constipation is also very helpful and they usually like it so much they will eat this when they won't eat other things.
Dougle-check your prescription of whatever meds you are given. Call a pharmacy if necessary and tell them it is for a 2lb dog. It is also easy to overdose a small pup on these meds. If you don't see an improvement within a day, go somewhere else. Pancur totally did not work for us so with our last bout of giardia the vet went right to Metronidazole and we had negative results at the end of the month!!
Please be aware that giardia can cause your pup to become anorexic as well. So if she continues to not eat, you'll need to try whatever you can to get her to eat something. The first time Sissy had giardia, she stopped eating her kibble all-together and I spent lots of $ in a quick timeframe trying any kind of kibble I could (to no avail). That is how we ended up home cooking and I've just kept it up. I am convinced she is much healthier with her daily yogurt and home cooking along with Missing Link and although she contracted giardia again, we were able to get rid of it quickly.
My vet explained that because the winter was so mild in most parts of the US, these parasites didn't die off like they usually do in the winter and they are seeing a tremendous number of cases really early. It might not have come from the breeder. Birds are carriers and it develops when the cysts are ingested/inhaled. Bird poop is everywhere and these cysts can live for a long time on dried out bird poop that just looks like chalk. If you have rain for a couple days in a row, chances are any wet spots will contain cysts as well.
Believe me - we've become very diligent about keeping baby wipes everywhere. Feet get wiped every time they come in from outside and bums get wiped as well.
Please update when you can.
