She has Giardia and throwing up all nite! OMG-So I posted in another section asking what giardia was. I am so livid right now I could scream. Monday, Truffles started throwing up and not acting herself. Not too interested in eating, but she'd lick the nutrical up and would eat if I hand fed her chicken/turkey and baby hotdogs  Still not eating good yesterday and I can't remember if she vomited. Gemma's vet called yesterday to say her stool sample was positive for giardia but that it was common and that I DID NOT have to treat my other dogs!! After we hung up, Gemma threw up 2 piles of food!! So she had eaten yesterday....Later in the night, she was not eating and acting weird like Truffles. I forced nutrical down her and went to bed - she did eat baby hotdogs first. About 2am she woke up puking. All bile. After that, she was up every hour vomiting!!! SHE IS 2 POUNDS! My vet and hospital are supposed to be one of "the best" but in 1 hour I'm gonna read them the riot act! They are acting so nonchalaunt about all of this!! At 5:30 this morning they were like "oh she'll be ok to not eat anything until 2pm when the dr has his first opening!" I'm like "SHE IS 2 POUNDS!!" I opted for an earlier appt with a different doctor - hence a second opinion as well. She hasn't thrown up since about 7am now....she is sleeping right here and not interested in food or water. I did not give her nutrical after the last 2 times she threw up because I thought she shouldn't have anything in her tummy....now I'm at a lose and not sure what to do or not to do!!?? I have gotten great advice in the other thread about Giardia and how contatious it is - total opposite of what my wacko vet says!!! Please keep her in your prayers....and Truffles too. i'll update as soon as we get back from the dr. God I'm sick about this and about getting this baby with so many issues from this breeder when I NEVER have had a problem with my other 2 that came from another breeder!! Why did I think I should look for a different breeder when I already had a great one????????????????? I'm so mad at myself...... |
Did someone tell you not to feed her? Was it that vet office? If so, I'd ignore it (if it were me). In all likelihood, it's giardia - so no reason to fast her. Try some plain rice as the starch/carb may help absorb some of nauseous-causing juices. |
I am so sorry about your babies, although I admit I know absolutely nothing about Giardia. I can't imagine fasting under any circumstances to be ok, they may throw it up, but atleast there is the hope they could have gotten something from the food first, even if only a little. |
Sounds like the giardia is in the upper GI.. thus the throwing up. I fed Armani boiled rice mixed with boiled chicken when he was having diarhhea. and pumpkin to firm up his stool. I also heard that yogurt helps their tummies :) |
They must have found some source of water that is contaminated with infective oocysts. Stay away for any water that is on the ground or in streams. I hope the Vet. gives them Flagyl (metronidazole) if indeed it is giardiasis. Remember, when he takes a smear of fresh stools, a negative fecal does not exclude giardia, as oocysts are shed only intermittently. Three negative fecal smears collected at least two days apart should be obtained before the diagnosis is excluded. New serology tests (ELISA, IFA) ae becoming available. |
Armani was on Panacur... |
Luckily, Mugzy has never been sick yet. But when my kids are, the doc says wait till they haven't puked for about an hour. Then give them a small amount. Wait 15 min to 1/2 hr. If they hold that down, give them a little more then wait. If they puke it up, wait 1/2 to 1 hr and start again. Good luck:thumbup: |
Your 2 lb. yorkie You need to get to the Vet and get your puppies on a drip, so they do not get dehydrated!!!!! They also need medicine to clear up Giardia, it does not clear up by itself! If a puppy keeps throwing up, it loses all the natural good bacteria, and only a drip from the Vet can rehydrate them while their tummy settles down. I would also check for coccidia, as that comes from the stress of going to a new home, and can be deadly if not treated, their poop will smell really bad, and does not always show up on the stool sample, it is treated with a Sulfur drug for 14 days. If the medicine does not clear up the problem, back to the vet and insist on another check for coccidia, it can eat holes in the intestinal track and kill your puppy! Please keep us posted, and get those babies on drips, you do not want to take any chances, they do need to fast to settle down their tummy, but not without a drip to keep them hydrated! Best of Luck, I am worried about your little 2 lb. baby! |

Armani did not get dehydrated but I did give him wet food instead of kibble (he wouldn eat the kibble) and I think the wet food kept him hydrated. I also took a syringe and fed him yogurt through that.. |

it might be made for other things as well.. other YT members whose yorkies had giardia were also on panacur.. |
Mine was on Panacur for the first round - and is now on Metroniazole for 30 days, second round. I also thought it was strange to prescribe Panacur. |
how is marcel by the way :) |
Much better, thank you! 3 days of firmer poopers - sometimes w/ a little soft-serve, but nothing like before. I hope this is the last round of it. How's Armani? |
