| diarrhea every month for 9 months... I got Tootsie 9 months ago from a pet shop, and she's now 11 months old. Ever since we got her she has had diarrhea like clock work every month. Her behavior changes, she gets more temperamental and agile and her poop is loose, sometimes mucousy and last month she had blood in her stool for the first time. We have taken her to the vet on numerous occasions and they said it was coccidia, then when it came back it was giardia, then when it came back they couldn't find anything....and they always gave me an antibiotic to treat it. The vet finally told me to change her food to an intestial food by Royal Canin which at first seemed to help, but yet again her diarrhea has come back. I know something is wrong with my dog...I have taken her to three different vet's for second and third oppinions, but they all say they don't see anything in the fecal exam. Has anyone had this problem? I am worried that my dog is going to die because we are not treating the problem... Thank you, Jennifer

| I am sorry you are having that problem. It seems like the vets would have an answer for you

| Aww, poor Tootsie. When I got my second pup, Kalani, he had giardia and gave it to Hoku and it took several rounds of meds before we could get her clear. She seems to have an extra sensitive tummy and had the diarrhea for what seemed forever so I decided to switch her off of dog food and home cook instead, which seemed to do the trick!

| Make sure that the Royal Canin that you are giving her is not on the recall list. She might have an incredibly sensitive tummy. Maybe you can start homecooking for her. Try a bland diet such as plain boiled chicken and plain whtie rice at first, and see if that helps... If not, have them do another fecal. Sometimes, the fecals come back negative several times even though they do have some sort of parasite...Did they put her on Albon for the coccidia? Sometimes it takes several rounds of it to get rid of the coccidia and many times the fecals show up negative even though they are still there.

| I had a foster Yorkie girl come to me in a terrible medical condition. Bloody stools and had been given lots of medication for one thing or another. Poor little girl was in such a bad way. I took her off of all medications and dog foods that people had been feeding her. I put her on white rice and free range beef. She started feeling better and after a couple of weeks she was running, playing and had normal stools. Over the course of 8 more months, I tried different meats and different veggies, and of course eggs, fish, oatmeal, yogurt and such to see what she could eat and what she could not eat. I finally had a list of things she could tolerate without having bloody runs, so off she went to her forever mom in PA. After a couple of months her mom decided to feed her some such dog food that a Vet. recommended. She called crying that Jenny had bloody stools. I told her about the list of food she should stay on, so she went back to feeding what works. Then she tried a new "special" dog food for sensitive stomachs and back comes the blood. She finally went to an holistic Vet. who told her that what I had written down for Jenny to eat was perfect and for her to stick with that. Everything is normal and happy with Jenny and her mom. These Yorkies can have the most incrediable sensitive intestinal tracks of any dog I've ever known. You need to feed a bland diet. Good luck to you and your baby. |
