| HELP!!! Willow Had Her Surgery And I Have A Lot Of Questions!!! Willow had surgery on Monday to have her plate and screws removed from her leg that had been broken. She did so well under anesthesia that they decided to go ahead and spay her. I got to bring her home on Tuesday afternoon and she has a cast on her leg this time that she will have for 10 days then go back and have her stitches out and have another cast for 10 days and then have an ace bandage for another 10 days and have that changed and have another ace bandage for the remaining 10 days after that. Forty days and we are done!! Woopee!!! Since she came home she has really only been eating chicken baby food and a little soft food. So far two jars of chicken baby food and a little soft food and I have been pouring water in the soft food and mixing it up real good so she gets enough liquid. We haven't seen too much pee yet . . . but a few times. No poop yet. Is that because this diet is so soft? When do you think I will be seeing some poop here? She had a lot of poop right before I took her on Monday morning. She may have had some when she was at the hospital that I don't know about. So I need to know. When am I going to see poop? And can someone tell me about this cast on her leg. I am supposed to reach in and touch her toes to make sure they are warm? I am supposed to smell the cast for infection? She only has two incisions of one inch each this time with only two stitches. That should be okay. The last time she had a four inch incision and a lot of stitches and we managed to keep it dry and it healed up perfectly. Do I need to make her wear the cone? She is not trying to eat her stitches in her tummy. What do I need to know about her spay surgery? Any advice would be welcomed. Thank you.

| Many will use a baby onesie on them to prevent Willow from getting at her spay stitches. With regard to the spaying, just keep her calm during the week - which is sounds already like you've done. Not too much activity, no jumping (which she probably can't do with her cast anyway). Check the spay incision for redness, swelling and smell signaling infection. Other than that, she should be fine. I have no experience with casts and leg surgeries, but perhaps give the vet a call about her not pooping and see what they have to say.

| Wow, poor little baby girl! I sure wish her a good recovery. As far as poop, our little girl didn't poop until about 24 hours after the spay surgery after we finally got her to eat. If she isn't going 24 hours after her surgery, will she eat honey-nut cheerios or some little pieces of apple? These seem to help move things along for our baby girl whenever she hasn't been able to go on her regular schedule, being as how they provide fiber. Also, our little girl managed to wriggle out of her onesie during the night and nibble on her stitches. So you may want to use the collar at night to keep her from opening them. Otherwise, you will have to take her back tot he vet to have the incision reclosed. Our little girl stayed pretty still from the pain meds, but we also used Rescue Remedy as well. |

She probably isn't pooping because she hasn't been eating much. Why arent you feeding her regular dog food? is she being stubborn and not wanting to eat? Once she gets enough food in her she'll start pooping. baby food really isn't enough to get the bowels moving. Are her toes sticking out of the bottom of the cast? if they are then make sure they aren't swelling. if they start to swell then you need to take her back to the doc because the bandage is too tight. If the toes aren't sticking out of the bottom then watch the top of the cast for swelling. keep the bandage clean and dry. always put a baggie over it when going outside so it doesn't get dirty. If the bandage gets wet or starts to smell then take her back to get it changed. you don't need to put the cone on her when you're watching her but i'd put it on when you aren't in the room with her, when your not home, and at night. as for the spay incision. keep it clean and dry as well and don't let her get at it. watch for redness and swelling. a onsie or diaper or dress may keep her away if she's used to wearing it. or you can use the cone.

| I think it's pretty normal for them not to have a BM for a while after being spayed. Mine were the same way. I'm sure the diet is adding to it also, but I wouldn't worry yet. Hope the healing goes quickly! |

Donating YT 500 Club Member | I think a day or two is pretty normal to miss BMs after any kind of surgery considering both the trauma of it and the slighted food intake. Also, I think the anesthesia throws their system off, too. As long as she is eating something -- not vomiting, no diarrhea, no other obvious kinds of distress -- I think you're OK. If this goes into a third day, you definitely need to call the vet. |
