| Please help...any advice needed!!! I have had my furbaby for almost 3 weeks now and at first she seemed to be very healthy. Well on Valentines Day we woke up to find her barely breathing in her crate..we had taken her out at 4am and she was fine so literally within a few hours this hit her. I immediately tried Karo thinking it was low blood sugar but still her breathing was very labored and she would barely move. We rushed her to the vet and as soon as we got there she began coughing up a small amount of blood and her gums were VERY gray The vet immediately took her back for xrays and concluded that she had some sort of upper respiratory infections(not sure why or what caused it) but her lungs were inflammed and some fluid was present. Needless to say Callie spent the entire day in their hospital hooked up to IV's and oxygen..they were not sure if she was going to make it Amazingly she pulled through it and has been home for a few days now..still on antibiotics but acting like her old self again...that was until this morning......I went to get her out of her crate as usual to go outside and noticed she was shaking (thought she might be cold) but as soon as we got outside I knew something was wrong by the way she was acting and picked her up only to find she was drooling and literally FOAMING at the mouth profusely!!!! I was scared to death, never seen anything like it. Again I gave Karo and called the vet. By this time Callie was acting normal again and drooling stopped so vet said to just keep an eye on her but that they were very concerned. She has a vet appt. on Thursday anyways so I was wondering if anyone has experienced anything similiar to anything I have listed above and can anyone suggest the appropiate tests that maybe I should have her checked for??? Any suggestions/experiences at all would greatly be appreciated...I just dont know what to think, will she outgrow this? |

Peeka Boo I See You! Donating Member | I am so sorry you are going through this. Did she start the drooling after she ate? Does she act funny after she eats because it could be a liver shunt. I am no expert but mabey someone else can help

| You may want to inform your breeder..... I am sorry to hear about your Yorkie......I am sure you are worried.....I recommend going on the internet and research LS. Then PM Yorkie Rose, or Topknot.......on here.....they are very nice and will help you with advice......I am sure they have researched a lot...just the fact that they are YTCA members.... Its hard when most people are not experienced with this. Good luck to you. |

| I don't have any advice, but just wanted to tell you I'll pray for your puppy and I hope all turns out well. If it is Liver Shunt, surgery can many times correct that and some dogs live with it on a special diet. The drooling makes me think seizures, only because my daughters dog used to have seizures and he would drool after that ended. The drooling and foaming at the mouth also makes me think of Maddie when she had tonsillitis, but I wouldn't think your baby would get tonsillitis while on antibiotics. Best wishes to you and your little one!

| So sorry you and your little one are going thru all this. Sending prayers that the Dr.s can find out what is wrong and fix it so she can start feeling better and get back to normal. Poor little thing. Hugs to both of you.

| I was reading my Yorkie book and it says depending on the severity of the shunt, your vet might recommend managing the disease with medications and a low-protein diet. Some cases are best treated with surgery to close the shunt. Sometimes, the outcome is very good, and the dog will live a long life. Liver shunts are considered to be hereditary -- maybe you should talk with the breeder you got the puppy from. I hope your sweet baby gets to feeling better soon.

| I wanted to post the information I have just learned. My yorkie is now 3 years old. She would go through bouts of chewing on wires, and seem a little disoriented but it would go away in one day and she would be back to normal. One day I found a sudafed pill on the floor, it looked like it had been licked and she was pacing, and her head was bobbing. Naturally I thought she had eaten part of the pill or the mere licking had caused this reaction. I rushed her to the vet, they put her on an IV..she spent the night and the next day was totally back to normal. This was 1 year ago. Up until recently she had been great. This past week she started acting disoriented, head bobbing, chewing on wires, not sleeping, and pacing. Immediately I had thought maybe she at something outside..poisonous. Rushed her to the vet, they did an IV, and my vet said she would do a bile test on the slight chance that it was something with her liver. She has always eaten a good amount, and is a healthy weight. So some of her symptoms fit liver shunt ..but not all..and she is 3..which is much older to discover such a problem. My vet who is a dream found that her levels were at 300! Normal is 25! My poor babe. Long story short..they did a liver scan she does have a liver shunt...we have put her on meds, and an LD diet only. She is doing great now..and I am now nursing her back to health..until the operation. I wanted to post this because I had wished I was able to catch it earlier....yorkies are born with this ...some handle it better than others..but it can be very hard to discover. Also, does anyone know much about the actual surgery...complications, success rates? I am trying to educate myself on it as best a s possible. Thank you. |

Donating YT 30K Club Member | I am sorry about your baby but surgery should take care of it. My Cali has the inoperable shunt so I do not have any experience with the surgery but several on here do and can provide info. You may want to start a thread just on this as more people will see the new post. Good luck

| Please go to Liver_Shunt_And_MVD_Support ? Liver Shunt & MVD/HMD Support and join. There is a wealth of information on this board about LS/MVD. I pulled through a little Yorkie boy with LS. See his video in my signature. He will go on to live a long happy life with few restrictions. I also have one in my home now that has MVD, not repairable. He will be on a special diet for the rest of his life and hopefully he will live a long happy one. My guess is to change the diet right away if her numbers are high. Mine is on LD which you need to get at to get vet. If you need any support, please feel free to email me and I can call you. Good Luck. Let us know what happens.

| The drooling sounds like some sort of seizure to me...This happened to Miko before we found out about his liver condition.
