I was reading my Yorkie book and it says depending on the severity of the shunt, your vet might recommend managing the disease with medications and a low-protein diet. Some cases are best treated with surgery to close the shunt. Sometimes, the outcome is very good, and the dog will live a long life.

Liver shunts are considered to be hereditary -- maybe you should talk with the breeder you got the puppy from.
