| Is he sick or is it just a cold? Finnigen had surgery for a broken leg on Jan 5th. This past Thursday I took his bandage off. His incision looked fine. He started to lick so when I can't watch him (when I leave the house or at night), I place a clean gauze pad over the incision and wrap it with a tensor bandage (not tight) then secure it with medical tape (not the clippy thing that comes with the bandages because I didn't want it to pose a chocking hazard). Since last Friday, he has been very tired. Doesn't want to play (but then he hasn't really been interested in his toys since his surgery). He sleeps alot. He is still eating and drinking normally, and he still get's excited about a treat (carrots, celery, apple). Occasionally his ears and the top of his head are warm and I think he may have a fever. His nose looks a bit runny at times (clear discharge only), and then other times it's warm and dry.. His shots are up to date, he hasn't been in contact with any other animals (other than at the vets on Jan 5th -- but that seems too long ago to have picked something up). He had one episode of coughing on Sunday, that lasted about 10 minutes. He appears to me to have a cold, I just wanted to check here to see if anyone thinks I should take him in. I know you can never be too careful but like most I hate to take him in if there's nothing wrong. He also doesn't appear to be getting any worse, I figured if it was an infection it would appear to worsen. Honestly, he just seems to be feeling under the weather. I have 3 skin kids and this is how they act when they have a cold. Any advice is welcome! Shar-Lee & Finnigen

| I can't say from anyone elses experances, but I have a yorkie that broke his neck in July and he was sleeping alot after surgery. I always call them his healing days. He still does this. And his head would get warm once in a while but there was never a temp when I checked. His temp would be normal. And I have noticed since his surgery because they have to put the tube down their throats that he does cough some only after he drinks. I think it might be from scar tissue in the throat. Then again I am not a doctor. But I have experiance everything you are going through and Babybear has been fine. And believe me if I thought something was wrong I would call the ER or the vets and they would just say keep an eye on him and call if he gets worst. So this is what I used as a rule of thumb with him. I say do what you would do for your children. If you would take them to the doctors when they do not feel well then take your baby to the doctors. I treat Babybear like a child and everything seems to be going fine. I might not have been much help, but I want you to know I have been there and am still there with my little guy. Good luck and keep us updated please.

| Thanks, I called the vet and she confirmed what I thought, it's probably just him getting over his surgery and a small cold. She said he sounds like he's doing alright, but if he gets worse of if I'm really concerned to bring him in anytime and they'll fit him in. I feel much better now! Thanks Shar-Lee & Finnigen Forgot to add that she said as long as he's eating and drinking it's a good sign.

Phantom Queen Morrigan Donating Member | you can try taking his temp at home. take it while he's relaxed and hasn't been worked up about anything. Normal range for dogs is 101-102.5.

| He is getting better please check out his post Babybear Update. He had undiagnosed AAI(Atlantoaxial Instabilty) a defect in the vertebrae the first two. There is a instability there and his doctor never caught it and he jumped off my lap and broke his neck. Took him to the vets giving him mouth to mouth and the doctor misdiagnosed again. I went for a second opinion and found he had a broken neck. But please check out his post of updates. Thank you for asking.

| I would check the temperature at home and if the pup has fever for two days or so, then I probably would take him to the vet - my pup is very old, and susceptible to infections, so taking her temperature gives me the idea of whether if her body is fighting infection. I hope your pup feels better soon |
