| Hypoglycemia in tiny 18 week old pup Bobo had what I think was a hypoglycemic attack today (this about the 3rd one he has had). I noticed he did not eat well yesterday at each meal, he also had a grooming appt yesterday. He was playful and did fine all day, this morning he ate a little at 3:00 a.m. then around 7 am he did not eat much. I had to leave home at 10:45, I put out more food ( Wellness puppy canned food) I got home about 4 1/2 hours later, he stood up in his playpen I picked him up took him out to potty and he fell over was very shaky, I immediately took him and finger fed him, he did seem very hungry and ate prob about 2 tsp of canned food and I also gave him a little karo syrup. He perked up a few minutes later and urinated also He is doing well now. He has never had a good appetite. Most dogs love to eat, not Bobo. He does seem to like this food but just doesnt eat very much. I also leave out Artemis dry puppy food all the time for him. He is now 18 weeks old and weighed 2lbs at the vets about 2 weeks ago at 16 weeks of age. I am going out of town Christmas day for 7 days, my brother is staying here to dog sit, I am afraid he may not be as attentive as I am even though I will leave very specific instructions, Should I have nutrical on hand for him to give at a certain time of day and does this really help their appetites, if so should I start him on this or is he to old for this. Thanks for all of your advice. |

| I'm sorry your baby is not eating as well as he should. They can be so stubborn! Maybe you should sit down with your brother and talk about the attention that Bobo will need while you're away. If you don't feel that he will take things seriously, please consider having someone more responsible take care of him for you, or cancel your trip. The Nutrical, IMHO, is for use in EMERGENCY situations only. Given too much it can cause problems. It's for when they just will not eat due to illness or other factors. The best "cure" for hypoglycemia is to make sure that they are eating regularly and well. I have a recipe posted on the Health and Diet section, just do a search for hypoglycemia and you should find it. If he won't eat the dog food, you can try this, though I have to warn you that it's difficult to get them back onto the dogfood again Keep us posted. I hope he starts eating better for you!

| I know your going away but I would rule out anything medical that is causing this pup to have the hypoglycemic bouts. Maybe you should have a bile acid test to rule out livershunt

| I will contact my vet tomorrow, I was just under the impression that this could be common among tiny pups, I need to do research on liver shunts tonight. Any other thoughts on this??? |

Donating YT 30K Club Member | Cali had 3 episodes of hypoglycemia when she was young and she was about the same weight as yours maybe smaller. I had to feed her every 2-3 hours at first and you have to make sure she eats at every meal. I still feed Cali 3 times a day otherwise she throws up. I used to give her Nutrical as needed, when she was stressed or more active or wouldn't eat. Cali was also diagnosed with a mild liver shunt but they didn't think it was related to her hypoglycemia episodes. Cali did grow out of the hypoglycemia at about 7-8 months. I can't tell you how fast these little ones can go down and you have to make sure she is eating and get her to the vet at the first sign of illness. I would be too nervous to leave her with someone not familiar with how important it is to care for her.

| I completely understand what you are going through. I have been dealing with hypoglycemia with my little 9wk old baby. We had to feed her every two hours with a syringe and she is very tiny also. I strongly suggest you take her and have bloodwork done also. I did and they think my Gidget has a liver shunt. I truly hope that is not what is wrong with Bobo. I will keep you in my thoughts and I wish you the best of luck.

| tdavis, I would definitely take him to the vet to get a bile acid test. Your story sounds very similar to what happened to my yorkie when he was a puppy, he had a few hypoglycemic attacks when he was about 13-15 weeks old...He would never eat either. On a couple of occassions, he would fall over. Anyway, we took him to the emergency vet because we were so scared. We asked if they could check for liver shunt, and obviously they didn't have experience with yorkies because they said "No, he's too young, there's no need to check for that." They said that he wouldn't make it through the night. My husband and I decided that we were not going to let anything happen to him. So we took him home and we boiled some chicken, and gave it to him and plain white rice. He ate a little of that and he started to look better. On days that he wouldn't eat (almost everyday) we had to force feed him soft food with a syringe. So we started feeding him baby food because he would not eat dog food. This food seemed to open up his appetite. After a couple of months he seemed to have recovered quite a bit. To make a much longer story short, we found out that he had a liver shunt later on, and that's why he had all those problems as a pup. Had the vet checked for it when we asked we would have known much sooner, but the vet made us feel stupid for even thinking a puppy that young could have a liver shunt. I was not satisfied so my husband and I decided to take him to another vet to get him bile acid tested, and the Sunday before his appt. he had a seizure and was convulsing pretty badly. We rushed him to the new vet and they tested him for several things and decided it was probably a liver shunt. If you have any questions, just pm me and I'll go into more detail. P.S. Many people think that the only indication of a seizure is convulsions, but actually if you notice your dog staring into space, falling over, walking sideways, those are signs that he's having a seizure.

| Liver shunt??? I am so upset to write this, but it is a possibility Bobo has liver problems. We are going to see about testing tomorrow. If anyone has any ideas or know of any procedures that need to be done let me know. We went to the emergency hosp today and have to follow up with our regular Dr. on Monday. Please say a prayer for my baby. Tammy |

| Tammy I dont know if you have the funds but there is an EXCELLENT LS dr in Tenn. Shes the best and probably the one with best prices. I would suggest you join http://pets.groups.yahoo.com/group/L...d_MVD_Support/ They can help you with all those questions you have and they will suggest the same dr. I know of someone who traveled all the way from NY to see her. If you cannot get there Im sure their are drs who do the surgery in your area. Here is Dr Tobia's website http://www.vet.utk.edu/clinical/sacs/shunt/faq.shtml

| Thanks Chrissy0277 for responding I just signed up for that group. I am afraid we wouldn't have the money to go to Dr Tobias, we are close to Univ of Florida, I think he will have testing done there, I can only pray that they will know what to do. And provide me with a lot of information that I will understand. I appreciate any info you and anyone else may have |
