| Puking and Pooping Blood Hello all, I havent been on here in a while... Punkin was very sick recently... She was puking and pooping blood. She does not eat dog food so I usually boil chicken for her... well one night we were having ribs and I gave her a few little pieces. The next day she was puking and pooping the blood. We rushed her to the vet and they did all kinds of tests on her.. they gave me all the worse case scenarios and I was so sick... I was worried to death. End result the doctor thinks she had a reaction to eating pork which I will never feed her again. They even thought she might have parvo. She is up to date with all her shots and she is a year old now. She also only goes out once a day. Anyways, she has been on some stomach meds, something like a pepcid and an antibiotic, and an anti diarrhea pill and an anti bleeding/puking pill. She is almost done with her meds...and today my mom called me...Punkin goes to Camp Grandma during the day while im at work... my mom told me she threw up and she was sleeping alot on and off... tonight when I came home I could see she was mopey and sleepy...I gave her some of her nutrical to perk her up but she got up and went and drank some water...and it all came up... Im sooooooooooooooo worried about her. Does anyone have any suggestions on what I can do????? I will of course be calling the vet first thing in the morning...but for tonight...She is supposed to get her meds twice a day... So far this evening I only gave her the pepcid to settle her stomach. Also, she has been acting weird since have been giving her the meds...humping everything in sight!! She never does that...she had a period a few months ago...so I know she is not in heat... She has been humping her hedgehog.... its the weirdest thing! Anyways, for tonight any suggestions would be helpful till I call the vet first thing in the morning...Also, any suggestions on food....I cook for her cause when she was a baby...she was really sick and I had to force feed her...now dog food makes her gag...I have tried SO many! Thanks all Kim |

| I am not much help on advice, but wanted to say I'll say a prayer for little Punkin. If she is acting lethargic and sickly, you could take her to an ER doc. If she's acting normal, then wait till morn. Make sure she's getting some water and if she's not drinking on her own, give her some with a syringe or eyedropper. Maddie and I send get well wishes and hugs to you! Please keep us updated on how she's doing!!!

Banning Thread Dictator Donating Member | Please see a vet ASAP. Puking and pooping blood is not good. I don't claim to know the cause, but it sounds potentially serious to me. And please ask your vet about her diet. Boiled chicken every day sounds like it could be too high in protein while not providing enough nutrients. Again, I'm no expert, but your vet is. Good luck, and let us know how it comes out.

My furkids Donating Member | I hope and pray everything works out for your little one...I would STOP the table food...especially the pork...these little ones can't take all that fat! Have you tried offering her a good canned dog food? Sadie has always been a very picky eater...I changed her food from Innova to Nutro Ultra Adult. (I have a puppy and she eats the Nutro puppy) Nutro also has canned food. I give Sadie 4 small chunks and Lillie 3 chunks of the canned and cut it up in their food...They really like it and it's good for them. Good Luck and I pray your baby will be well soon

| Please take her right into the vet! My friends little poodle had these symptoms on Sunday and she died in her arms during the night. Please don't wait. She wanted to see if her Lyndsey got better and she died. Please make the vet listen.

| The ribs were probably the start of the problem - she was suffering from pancreatitis. Chicken (white meat no skin) and rice would be a good diet for now, but her regular diet needs to be a high quality dry (preferably) or canned with no corn, meat as the first ingredient and no meat by products. Her pancreas could still be inflamed and she might need to be taken off of all foods and put on ivs until it heals. It could also be that she does have parvo and the ribs were just a coincidence. Even vaccinated dogs can get parvo. I know you've learned your lesson about the harm just a bit of people food can cause (pork ribs is probably one of the most dangerous). Hope others can learn from you and only give dog food to their babies. White rice and chicken is good and safe for digestional upsets, but will lead to nutritional deficiencies if that is all that is fed on a regular basis. | Also, talk to the vet about giving Nutrical - the pancreas is responsible for making insulin which controls the level of sugar in our blood so if the pancreas is affected maybe it doesn't produce the insulin in the proper amounts so you shouldn't give sugar (of course, it could be that they may need more too). I don't know how the production of insulin is affected, if at all, but definitely something you will want to ask your vet. |

I found out 10 years ago about pork when my husband and I gave it to one of his cockers - she didn't get sick from it and certainly no blood or I'd have freaked - but she did have problems going to the bathroom ...once I got on the net and found out about how BAD pork is I try to pass it along but many people just don't know - the good thing about the net is we can look BEFORE feeding them now - if something is questionable - there is always a website that will tell you - or right here on this site too - | |

| Punkin's Progress I did take her to the vet the first time all the puking and pooping blood happened...they did tons of tests on her...and everything came back negative....they took an xray of her belly and her intestines were swollen.....I called the doctor early in the morning and he said since I finished the meds...she should be doing better but to give her 5mg of pepcid in the morning and 5 at night...also he wanted me to give her 5ml of pepto bismo... same morning and night.... she is doing very well... she is very playful and has been running around..I have been giving her a plain diet of chicken..and turkey the vet also told me that it was ok for her to eat that...but she needed a multi vitamin like Pet tab.... I have also tried TONS of dogfoods... and even dog crunchies.... she will not eat them... I have tried Nutro....and a bunch of others...someone recently told me to try Nuveen? i think its called.... anyways, I have to call the vet in the morning... I am going to ask him about her pancreas.. when they took all the tests they said her blood levels were all normal... but I will still ask....Also, if something was really bad I would not hestitate to take her to the emergency vet.... the night I brought her to the vet he wanted her to stay...but I asked if he had someone that stays with the animals overnight he told me he did not...I decided to take her home with me cause she was very alert...and energetic... he gave me all the emergency numbers and if something had gone wrong I would have brought her to the animal hospital right away...Did I learn my lesson? BIG TIME... I would never want to do something purposely to hurt Punkin...she is the most precious thing to me..anyways, I will update you on her progress tomorrow..... |
