| My mother had two pekingnese that each lost an eye(due to a dog fight), it only takes a second and it seems to pop right out of socket. On one dog they put the eye back in but it didn't take...the eye turned a milky blue color. She ended up having the eye removed. I just saw a yorkie with only one eye about a month ago. She was a little 3 pound girl that had been bitten by a big dog. Luckily she wasn't hurt too bad so please don't blame yourself. She'll be just as cute if she only ends up with one eye. At least she's alive.

| I'm so sorry to hear about Kia, that must have been terrible . I hope she recovers fully, she sounds like a little trooper. The same thing happened to my Cannelle, however it was before I adopted her so I don't know the specifics of the incident, but I heard about her treatment from the rescue. When she was 6-months-old, four large dogs attacked her and her eye actually popped out of the socket. She was rushed to the vet and left there for the rescue, and the vet tried to put it back in the socket. However, the eye wouldn't "take", and it got infected. It was looking worse and worse every day, therefore, a week later it was removed permanently. There was a chance that the optic nerve was damaged and the rescue thought that she might go completely blind, however her optic nerve was fine and she sees out of her other eye perfectly. She does have a bit of trouble getting around and will bump into things occassionally (especially if it's dark), but she really is just a normal dog. The main thing I notice is depth perception when something's close up, but she adapts and has even learned to catch things. She has no trouble judging the distance to my other dogs so she can jump all over them and really, most people don't even notice her eye. I even think that, if possible, it makes her even more special. I'll pull out her old vet records and see if it says anything else (and if I can read the vet's writing ). As scary as it is, after her treatment, it's incredibly important to get her out there with dogs of all different sizes that you know you can trust completely so she doesn't become fearful of them for the rest of her life. Cannelle had to undergo a couple other surgical procedures due to the damage and it took her a while to get back out there. She's very fearful of most dogs to begin with (especially large dogs) and whenever we get a foster in she keeps her distance, but within a couple of days she's happy and trying to play. It gets better with each and every dog she meets. I hope that Kia fully recovers, one eye or two...she's still going to be the same adorable little dog. Please give her a big kiss for me! Also, please let me know if I can do anything to help or if you have any questions. It sounds like you're doing a great job and being a wonderful mom. |
