I heard that if they only do it every once in a while, it's ok, that you should let them express their glands naturally. Because if you get them done, the dog naturally becomes too lazy to do it themselves naturally. I don't know what that means but do you think there is any truth to it?

Coco scoots her butt every now and then but I've never taken her to have her glands expressed. She does it maybe once every 2-3 weeks or so. Some times I see her do it more often but she eventually stops doing it which to me means she expressed them somehow naturally. (I hope not all over my stuff.lol) but I've never smelled anything funky from her other than a fart here and there.

Ok, 2 stupid questions.

I didn't realize dogs could express their glands naturally. Is that true?

Second, I for whatever reason thought only boys had anal glands to express. Am i wrong?

Dan calls it "Scooty Butt"... he even has a song for it using the tune from "The Streak" by Ray Stevens (Love his songs BTW!). Jazzie does it too. I think it just itches some times .

Baci does this sometimes when some poo is stuck in his hair bc for some reason he didnt finish going before he started moving.
However, the anal glands thing is very important. My fiances Maltese almost died bc his anal gland needed to be drained and was infected. One of the signs was him scooting his butt on the floor.

try cleaning his bum, maybe cut some of the hair off in that area and see if you can see anything swollen.

WOW Anal Glands Who would of known. No I had to have 1 of yorkies glands 2 and I also do it at the groomers.

ahhh---we call it SCOOCH BUTT. If everything is working properly, the anal glands will be expressed naturally, as others have said here. Some dogs have a chronic problem and need assistance. Eddie's condition might resolve itself before you go to the vet. Make sure you keep him on dry food so his stools are hard. (This is probably more than you ever wanted to know about anal glands).

Edie does this periodically, but it always resolves by itself. I always check to see if she has any cling-ons which make her scooch also. I just give her a warm pressure wash.

Worst case scenario---abcessed anal glands. This happened once to Edie...it was a big red bump (you couldn't miss is) and it must have really hurt. She was licking it constantly. The vet lanced it and put her on antibiotics for 10 days. Thankfully, it never recurred.

LOL, that link is both helpful and bizarre! It actually has an animated graphic that allows you to express the dog's anal glands.

I took Nina to the groomer yesterday and she's been scootin' all over the place! She even tried to do it on the sidewalk! Do you all think that it's just itchy from being practically shaved? My boyfriend and I laugh and get grossed out at the same time whenever she does it... She does it every so often normally, usually after she poops, but since yesterday she's been especially finicky.

She is probably just itchy from the sanitary shaving at the groomers. Maybe they used too close a blade and irritated her a little. Either way she should be fine. BTW I got a kick about of your "NinaPants" name. My female is named Brandy and we usually call her BrandyPants. I have no idea where the pants part came from but we all use it. Sometimes we just call her Pants or Miss Pants. I have a little male named Titan also and lately we have started calling him TiteyPants.....
