| Holding Tail Down & Off to Side Hi all! I had a question and I thought I would check here before heading to the vet. Mojo has been holding his tail down and off to one side (or the other) on and off for a few days now. He is going to the bathroom normally - nothing looks to be in his poo (thought maybe worms might be causing this). He doesn't hold his tail like this all the time, just every now and then and doesn't seemed to be bothered by it. Sometimes while he is oustide playing, he will stop and just sit for awhile. I have checked out his tail and butt area and didn't find anything (tick, sore, swelling, etc). Sometimes, he doesn't want me to mess with his tail and sometimes it will shake for awhile and sometimes it does this after I mess with it. It seems to be happy (nothing causing him to worry or by afraid or anything like that). Any ideas what might be causing this? We did take him on a weekend trip with us, where we visited several parks, festivals, etc with other dogs. He did pick up two fleas (I check him for fleas/ticks/etc all the time - he is on K9 Advantix too). I was just wondering if he could have picked up something else? He hasn't eaten anything that he shouldn't have (that I know of - do keep him in constant eye sight) and he has been eating normally. Haven't changed his diet or snacks. We had the house bug sprayed while we were away - everything was cleaned, washed and mopped before he came in though and windows were left open for several days. (We have sprayed before - we do about 4x a year - and he has never done this, so don't think that is the cause). We don't have spiders or anything (that we know of), but we spray to make sure we don't. - Okay, I'm a freak when it comes to bugs in the house!

| First let me say that nothing will replace the advice of a good vet. You will feel better knowing you have the advice of a vet over anything else. Now let me ask, does he poop often or just every now and then or just regularly? I guess what I am trying to ask is does he seem to be constipated? Or maybe it might be his anal glands need to be expressed. I have read that some will drag their butt across the floor when their anal glands bother them. My little boy Sonny, will sometimes drag his butt across the floor, then sniff his tail and then jump up and run like his tail is on fire then stop suddenly to check his butt again. He has no worms and he's not constipated so our yorkie seems to have us stumped on why he does that. But you might want to check out symptoms of swollen anal glands on the site PetPlace.com to see if that fits your problem. Sorry I couldn't be of more help.

Phantom Queen Morrigan Donating Member | weird tale posture to me says a couple things. 1) back problems. is he standing funny at times too or not putting pressure on any one leg? is he holding his head weird at times? 2) lyme disease - he might have picked up a tick when you weren't looking and contracted lyme dis. 3) something wrong with an anal gland. does the area look read and swollen? these are just some things that i thought right after reading your post. i would take him to a vet just in case

| Thanks for responding. I have called the vet and we went over everything. Said to bring him in if I felt I really needed to, but to just watch him and pay attention to any new strange actions. Vet didn't think it would be worms because he takes a pill once a month, which takes care of all of them but tapeworms. Tapeworms are caused by fleas, but we would notice them in his poo (more than likely). He doesn't stand or tilt his head weird or act like he is hurt in anyway - not his tail, ears, tummy, back, lets, etc. He acts normal besides his tail hanging down and sometimes to the side. He eats normal and his poo is normal - which he doesn't seem constipated - goes with not problem - poo isn't hard, but isn't soft - it is in between but more toward the hard side - if that makes sense. His anal glands to not appear swelled, but he is going to the groomers next week and she always expresses them. He just went last month, so I am sure she had checked them then too. I know I have gotten a few ticks off him in the last month (boy, they are BAD here). He is on K9 Advantix and it seems to work alright. (Haven't found anything that I have been thoroughly happy with). I believe I looked up Lyme Disease online and in my first aid book and do not recall anything that pointed to they way he is doing his tail. I'm a freak when it comes to fleas and ticks - HATE THEM!!!! I haven't had a chance to look on line again and some of the new websites I found, but I will again in a minute. Quote:
Thanks again!

| Jenn218, How is your baby today? Doing well I hope. I wanted to tell you about a flea and tick spay that my vet gave me and I love it. It's Frontline Spay. It works so well that you can see fleas falling off immediately but it is safe enough to use on puppies and kittens 8 weeks of age and even the mother dog (as long as I didn't spay the belly that the pups fed from.) It's also water proof for 30 days. I haven't had any problems with it yet but maybe your vet can tell you more about it or other YT's that have used it too. I don't know what it cost from the vet. (our bills are usually lumped together) but I have a catalog from www.omahavaccine.com that sells it for $25.49 (250ml) I just wanted to share that with you and to check to see how Mojo is doing today.

Thanks for the information! I will check it out. There is a collar called Preventic (sp?) from the vet or vet store. It is about $13 and the same company makes another, just a different name - but from the same company that is only $6. They last for 3 months. My vet said that she uses this on her dogs during the summer months. I bought one for our outside dog and it seemed to work well. She seems to always get into ticks even with her Advantix! - Course, we live in the middle of no where, surrounded by thick woods and wildlife! I don't like the idea of collars on Mojo, so I didn't get one for him - plus, he isn't roaming around the "deer" woods like our outdoor dog does. We currently use K9 Advantix from the vet because it repels and kills fleas, ticks and mosquitoes. We tried Frontline when we first got him, but we were concerned with mosquitoes too and Frontline doesn't cover that. We still found a few ticks (every now and then) - I check as soon as he comes in, every time he has been out, I HATE them! - but ticks seem to be so bad this year here. He has never had fleas until I found the two this past weekend. I am sure those were picked up from being around so many other dogs!!! I did the flea comb and gave him a bath, then a few days later, it was his time for Advantix drop, so I think that (hopefully) took care of any that might have been missed.

| Glad to hear he is better. They seem to like to mess with our heads sometimes like they know we will go into a panic attack over the least little thing. I do anyway. I think my vet regrets that he gave us his cell phone number. We only call it during an emergency but he doesn't charge us extra for emergency calls. Our only problem with ticks comes from our neighbors dogs. They come over here for food and water and sleep on our porch at night and get fleas and ticks on our dogs. We block off the entrance to the porch but they will still find a way to get up on the porch and drop ticks and fleas. It's irritating. But I glad it was just one of those things instead of being something serious.

| I agree with the vet - I was going to tell you the same thing (especially since your little guy seems to be happy and comfortable).. watch him for a while and it will probably go away - and it did! I always feel that the most important indicator of our dog's health is the way they behave and the way they feel. If they are acting no differently, are eating and going to the bathroom normally, are playful, happy, and affectionate -- and don't appear to be experiencing any discomfort --- with something like a "crooked tail" or many other things, I'd certainly wait a while before I got very concerned. But, like your vet mentioned, you need to "keep an eye on them." Glad everything is better. Carol Jean |
