Default Help please, shot reaction?

My AprilLove had her bordatello shot today and she screamed when she got it. Now she seemed fine after about 1/2 hour, ate some and drank and played then rested for a while and all of a sudden got up and started yelping a couple times. She looks ok I think, but I have been holding her. Should I be concerned? Is this normal? She is 1 lb and 7 oz at just about 12 weeks
Please tell me what I should look for in a reaction?

Thank you
worried mommy

I hope someone with more experience than me can give you some advice. When Dezi got her shot, she was 2.7 lbs and she did yelp once in awhile that day. The following day she was back to normal. Hope your baby feels better.

thank you that eases my mind somewhat. I have been researching and now i see some vets administer through the nose, (not a shot), and they use the same amount no matter size? 1 CC I hope someone can advise on this i won't be able to sleep until i know she is in no danger!

I'm sure she is just a little sore. Are you planning on boarding her? I don't ever board mine and I never get bordatello. I've heard a lot of dogs have reaction to it and some even come down with kennel cough. Most vets don't even suggest it (but kennels do require it for boarding). Next time I would go with the intranasal form, but would only get it if required.

Also, don't rush to get the rabies and don't get it with anything other shot - your baby is so small. I waited until mine was almost a year (3 pounds), but he is exposed to very little since I don't board him, take him to Petsmart, or walks in dog parks. Also when you get the 12 and 16 week combination shots - just get parvo, distemper and adenovirus II combined - do not get corona or lepto added in.

Thank you Lacys Mom,
They did want to give her her vaccines as well today, but thanks to info I got on this site I told them I would rather wait a week. Also, not going to get the rabies for a while. Also, those three you mentioned are what they are recommending along with parainfluenza, should I tell them no on that one? Do they need it? Just a note, I will not be boarding her or even having her go potty outside, she will not be exposed to other dogs, (except my other 2 babies who are 90% inside dogs.

Thank you again,
I am sitting here with her in my arms (ok, my hand) feeling helpsless on how to make the owy go away. She is so sullen but is breathing and heartbeating normally.

From my experience(I used to work front office for a vet), dogs get their shots in the muscle, between their shoulder blades. It can be painful for a few days. If you are concerned, you should call your vet...it doesn't hurt to be too careful.

Hope your baby is feeling better soon!

Haven't heard about the parainfluenza causing any problems. I would be okay with mine getting it. If your dog isn't exposed to anything, I personally would skip the 12 weeks and just get the 16 week combo (parvo, distemper, adenovirus II, parainfluenza) and then a booster at 1 year and 4 months of the same and she should have lifelong immunity (you can check her immunity by doing titer tests). Wait at least until she is 6 months for rabies and don't have them give it to her while she is under anesthesia for spaying or baby teeth pulling, etc. There is really a lot going on with recommended vaccines now. Do some research and I think you will find most say to avoid bordatello, lyme, giardia, corona, and lepto all together.

Cali reacted that way when she got her second set of shots, 1st sset since I owned her and she came home, I put her in her pen to sleep and I went in to get her and she was yelping. i couldn't even pick her up without her crying. By the next morning she was fine. She was about the same size.I told the vet when I went in the next time and she now gives Cali a liquid paim medicine after her shots. I hope April love is better soon.

bunjee was sore after his shots. he'd yelp anytime i touched and tried to pick him up by the area where he got his shots. one time, he got 3 shots at once and it was so sad that evening. he yelped when he laid on either sides and even when he tried to sit. 'cause those are the areas he got his shots.

i think unless there shot area looks abnormal or if she starts to throw up and have a fever, it's okay. she's just sore.

Thank you everyone for your replies.
My AprilLove is much better today, back to her normal self. Hasn't yelped once. Last nght was ruff I don't think I slept more than 2 hours but I had to keep checking her little tummy and mouth to be sure there was heart beating and breath coming out. My Maltese never had any pain from her shots so this is new to me. I am researching about all of the vaccines and will tell them which ones I want her to have. I am really confused on why a little 1 lb pup would get the same dosage (1 CC ) as a 10 lb pup? Just doesn't make sense to me.

Thank you
Relieved Mommy

My Jewels had the same kind of reaction to the bordatello shot. She cried and didnt want me to pick her up and hid under a chair. She was better by the next day too.

Default Be Careful How You Word Your Opinions-

"Do some research and I think you will find most say to avoid bordatello, lyme, giardia, corona, and lepto all together."

"Most" is really pushing it. There are new studies that show that we are over vaccinating our pups. These vaccines are, however, a real neccesity. YOU as the owner must discover which vaccines are available to you and decide what and when you'll want your pup to receive. If not, your vet will give you the "routine" shots as taught to do in medical school. (Rabies, distemper/parvo and Bordetella-Kennel Cough vaccine)

I personally don't begin administering my vaccines (I do my own-except Rabies) until the dog is closer to 6 months of age. This poses a LOT of risks to my dogs and the best thing I can say is that I really watch where I take them and where I decide to let them walk. I don't necc. advise this, just my personal preference. Once in awhile I'll give the parvo/distemper to dogs younger than 6 months, but I certainly wait on everything else. And the smaller the dog, I'll space out my vaccines so they receive certainly no more than one to two per day until all are administered. I shutter to think just how hard all those little organs have to work to deal w/ the vaccines!

I HIGHLY recommend massaging the injection site immediately after wards! This will help spread the fluid into the tissue so the muscles won't get as sore. Further if they do get sore, you can put a warm damp cloth on the injection site, in my opinion, and this always seems to help. Oh! And I have a male that as soon as I give him his shots (no matter which) he retains a lump for about a week and a half, with no other symptoms. Interesting. Hope this helps!
