| Congestive Heart Failure Has anyone had experience with their precious little one having CHF? How did you treat and what was the prognosis? Note this is likely due to old age I appreciate any advice. My precious Cali

| Oh, your Cali is precious. I am so sorry...it is so hard when our babies age and start having medical issues. CHF is very serious but can be treated sometimes successfully for longer periods of time depending on the severity and response to medications. It is treated with diuretics and sometimes other cardiac meds. The problem with CHF comes with increased use of diuretics causing renal failure so the dosage is important. Once the kidneys start to go it becomes increasingly hard to maintain a balance. If you have access, you might want to consult with a cardiologist.

| Just to add to what ladyjane said, I think the decision also depends on the age and quality of life of your dog. As painful as it is for us, dogs only live a limited number of years, no matter the quality of their medical care. I lost my Lhasa to CHF. This was decades ago, so I’m sure there have been advances in canine medicine since then. However, she didn’t develop CHF until she was fifteen, and the limited medical options at the time would have carried some pretty harsh side effects while not extending her life significantly. So I opted to just do what was necessary to keep her reasonably happy and comfortable. She lived to almost seventeen, and I don’t think she could have lived comfortably much beyond that no matter what I had done. |

| Thanks to everyone! My husband & I, as well as little sis Mia, have been blessed to have a long time with Cali. She is 15 years old. She has had only one other medical issue which was major and chronicled here: https://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/si...back-legs.html Other than that, she's only had hypothyroidism due to age. Again, we are lucky and she has absolutely been a joy in our life. For those who may have mentioned: she is supposed to have an echo today and will be seen by cardiologist tonight so we will know how bad her heart is. This will help us know if we should fight hard to give her a little longer or if we are closer to the end. Does anyone have suggestions for how to handle her sister should we need to assist Cali to a peaceful rest? I just hate even thinking about this. Thank you to all the responses!

| I remember that incident from years ago! That was pretty scary stuff. I hope all goes well with the echo! She is a lucky girl to have such a loving family. As to your last question, last year I had to let one of my older fosters go who was very close with my Pippi. I took Pippi along with us so that she knew. I have seen pups mourn and it is so sad....I felt that this eased the pain. She seemed to understand.

Did you bring Pippi in the room when it happened? I may have a little time to research this cause we visited Cali tonight and she was so much improved. Spry & wide eyed. She was sleeping soundly in the oxygen kennel but when I reached in and she smelled my hand she jumped up, almost saying "mommy take me home!".

And she seemed fine after. I think if he had just "disappeared" she would have been very upset. She followed him around in his last few months and sat staring at him at times as if watching over him. Hopefully you are far from having to make that decision.

YT Addict | I spent late last night reading through Cali's old thread. What a harrowing experience. She's reached such an awesome age through the care you've given her. What a lovely girl she is, and Mia too. I hope the echo went well. Also hoping the condition is not too dire and that she may yet have more comfortable time with you and Mia. Taylor, I'm sad to read that your Callie has passed. :'( My deepest condolences to you.

| Thank ya'll so much! This has helped. Cali is doing much better: off the oxygen & Lasix. Ready to come home after her cardiology consult tonight. He is doing an echo so hopefully it isn't extremely bad. She is coming home on: Lasix orally, as well as Metvedin. She also takes Synthroid & theophylline I don't know how much time she has left but I'm thankful for every. single. moment.
