| Broken Tooth! Hubby noticed that Bon Bon was pawing at his face and sticking his tongue out oddly. We got a flashlight and peeked inside his mouth. Nothing we could see. I checked the hair on the right side of his face, nothing. On the left side was a fragment of tooth! Or bone. The dogs have a couple of bones they gnaw at, but they aren't the type that fragment, like a chicken bone. (Good grief, we know better than that!) They also have antler they can gnaw at. The fragment is stored where we can show it to the vet and we'll be stopping by tomorrow morning. It's always something. |

| We are getting the antlers from people who farm raise elk. The antlers are quite fresh and they split them open. The interior portion is quite soft. I can pick it apart with a fingernail. |

| My vet dentist said antlers were to hard so I would just be very careful.

| Well, he’s got more than 42 teeth right now. We are thinking he’s got an extra set of baby teeth. Friday he will have X-rays and possibly have teeth pulled. The fragment was from a retained baby tooth. |

| If it’s a baby tooth there is no need for X-rays. In all my four they had the baby teeth pulled when they got fixed.

On a positive note, the vet and vet techs complimented us on how well Bon Bon dealt with having his mouth examined. All my efforts on training him to tolerate toothbrushing paid off when it was important.

I trust the vet who has been caring for my dog since before he was born. At one point we even discussed doggy braces for his teeth to improve the alignment. She didn't recommend them at 6 months of age. If I were to go that route, I'd be taking him for orthodontic appointments. (And he would probably need x-rays.)

| Whew! The vet just called. Bon Bon has no additional delayed baby teeth. The x-rays showed no remaining roots or deciduous teeth. She had to pull four that hadn't been visible the last time she pulled baby teeth. So, in total, he had 10 baby teeth that had to be pulled, 6 before this and 4 this time. She wants us to give him pain meds and an antibiotic for about a week. No tooth brushing for a week. We have an assortment of soft foods available for him for the first few days. If things go as they have for his prior tooth removal, he'll be chowing down on his usual kibble in two days. The x-rays were such a relief to me. I now know for sure that his unusual mouth has been managed. Silver lining to this cloud? He only has sutures in one location. All the other holes from his baby teeth are so tiny, they will easily close up on their own. He is still gonna be a lap puppy for the next few days. I wonder what he will get from the tooth fairy? |
