| Kidney Failure and Struggling Liver Hello, it's been a long time since I posted here. My partner and I have been going through a tough time, he has been seriously ill and we have also moved house. Anyway, a week ago Lucy was diagnosed with acute kidney failure and a struggling liver. Her blood test results were way out of range. The vet didn't seem to want to give her anything. She didn't want to eat or drink but wasn't in pain. I didn't feel I should put her to sleep straight away so the vet advised sub q fluids for three days and kidney care food. Lucy wasn't happy getting the sub q fluids and was struggling very much so the next day I got a vet to come home last Friday and give her some fluids and show us how to do it. As soon as she saw him she got out of her bed, put both her paws on his knees as though to greet him. Since then she has continued to improve and is almost her normal happy self, but we have not been able to give her the fluids as she starts struggling, she hates it. She does drink on her own now, she doesn't like the kidney care food but eats some of it. She's always found in the kitchen when she smells food though. Her stools are normal now but they were black and tarry at first. She was also diagnosed with an enlarged heart three years ago. I don't know how old she is as she was a rescued Yorkie but she is quite old, she has cataracts and is missing a lot of her teeth. Another thing she likes doing is eating her poop, I'm really careful she doesn't do it but sometimes she gets away with it - is it possible that something like that could contribute to a kidney problem? Any advice about getting to eat more and administering the sub q fluids would highly be appreciated. I know that I shouldn't expect her to live much longer but she is a fighter and I want to give her the chance before the time comes when she wants to give up. Thanks, my apologies for the long post. |

| My heart breaks for you! Having lost our first yorkie mix, Elmo, to kidney disease, I completely understand how difficult it is when they hate the prescription food and have to have frequent fluid administration. He never regained any ground, and it was a daily struggle just to keep him stable. After a brave battle fought to please us, we let Elmo enjoy his final days eating his favorite food and cuddling with us. In the end, our doctor helped ease his trip along the rainbow bridge. My thoughts are with you, and I hope that your little one is able to make the adjustments needed to regain a comfortable level.

| Thank you so much for your message, it’s so good to come to Yorkietalk and find someone who understands what you’re going through. I’m so sorry that you lost your Elmo to kidney disease. It’s so hard to see our little ones suffer, then finally having to let go of them. At first the vet had told us that we should give Lucy anything she wants to eat and also the renal food which she wouldn’t take but slowly she got to like it. I also switched brands of it. Now I’m not so sure whether I should feed her anything else besides it. This morning she was back to her old habit of ‘Hovering’ the kitchen floor! Anyway, we will enjoy any extra good times with her. We hope that it won’t be for just a few days. She’s always been loved and showered with hugs and kisses although now she gets lots extra! Thanks again for your post! |

| Hello again, I should’ve written sooner, today I’ve come here to ask advice about a problem I have with my other Yorkie, Jake, and this I posted in General Training Questions Forum. Following Lucy’s diagnosis of acute Kidney Failure, she lived for another three months. In February she stopped eating altogether again. I nursed her for a couple of weeks but all in vain. Finally I had to make that dreaded decision when to put her to sleep. I had the vet come to our home to do it. My Little Miss Sunshine is gone but never will be forgotten. |

| I am so sorry to hear that your beloved Lucy is gone, but know that you did the best thing for her by releasing her from her pain. It is always the hardest decision that you will ever make for our dear little ones, but it truly is a final act of love. May sweet memories of your time together bring you comfort!
