| Bella with possible eye infection. We had Bella groomed two days ago, and today we noticed that one of her eyes was weepy and the eyelid partially closed. We got her in to the vet today, and they did some diagnostic work. They stained her eyes to make sure that she didn't have any scratches (she didn't), and prescribed a triple antibiotic ointment with a corticosteroid to treat for five days. An interesting tidbit is that you are NOT supposed to use a corticosteroid if the eye is scratched--it will cause horrible eye damage if you do. Our vet had to treat a dog that had been incorrectly treated with corticosteroids for an eye scratch by another vet. The dog's eye was really messed up. I'm glad that my vet knows the proper treatment protocols. Bella's diagnosis is either a minor eye infection, or possible mild dryness due to excessive drying at the groomer's. Either way, she is expected to make a complete recovery. I'll update in a few days.

| Poor Bella. Hope it heals quickly. We had something similar happen with Callie and it happened a few days after grooming also.

| That's interesting. Did they ever come up with the cause, or did it finally just go away by its own?

| After medicine it went away but they never had a definitive reason of why it happened. Callie is 11 and has never had the issue before but I’m thinking it had to do with either hair getting in the eye to irritate it, shampoo or possibly the blow dryer. I guess it’s possible it had nothing to do with the grooming to but not sure.

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | Do they use drier boxes at your groomer's...? I bet it was from that. I am not a fan of those boxes *at all* bc I think they're very traumatic for a dog, but also bc I've heard of many dogs having the exact same eye reaction after being stuck in them too long. I don't take mine to a groomer, but if I did - I wouldn't allow box-drying. Yes - totally correct that you should never, ever give steroid in the eye until it's confirmed the eye issue is not due to a corneal scratch.

| Did Callie's incident involve the mobile groomer? I'm wondering whether just a regular blow dryer could cause mild eye injury. When we're blow drying Bella following a bath, I'm careful not to blow directly on her face. I get her to lick my face, close my eyes, and blow from the back of her head.
