| Torn ACL Good Morning! My 6 year old Yorkie has been diagnosed with a torn ACL. She also suffers from allergies, especially in the spring...so, she it pitiful. My Vet said that small dogs can often heal well without the surgery. (With restricted activity for 6-8 weeks) Has anyone had to deal with this? If so, did you opt for the surgery, or was it able to heal? Thank you for any recommendations!! |

Is your vet really well-versed in Ortho, especially knees...? If not, believe me, you'll absolutely want to get a 2nd opinion from someone who specializes in knees as one of their areas of expertise.

| According to your Yorkietalk profile, you are in Gaithersburg, MD. There is a world-renowned sports medicine and orthopedic veterinary center not far from you in Annapolis. They have board certified sports medicine and orthopedic surgery specialists on staff and consider surgery to be a last resort, so this might be a good place to start for information. Here is their link: Veterinary Orthopedic Sports Medicine Group | Annapolis Junction, MD*|*VOSM |

| Not fixing it will result in very bad arthritis. I would check with an orthopedic surgeon.

| Thank you, I will. From what I have been reading, it sounds like waiting to do surgery is potentially very detrimental. |

It looks like they don't recommend surgery only in cases in which the tear is mild and the dog is too weak or old to undergo surgery. They recommend surgery in most cases. | |

| aCL Yes! I'm afraid that if she doesn't get the surgery, miss just a matter of time before the other leg tears, as well. She's only 6... And VERY active. We also have a 2 year old lab, who she likes to keep up with...and, a decent amount of stairs. It's probably just a matter of figuring out which surgeon makes the most sense factoring in experience, distance & cost. Thank you, for the link! |

| I'm just piping in to tell you that we repaired a full tear in Sophie when she was about the same age as your baby and then last year she had an assumed partial tear in the other leg but wasn't cleared for surgery. I can attest that the arthritis from the partial tear "repairing" itself has left her with worse arthritis than before and with all of the cold and rain here lately, she has been very stiff. She'll be 8 next month and her poor little back legs are so pitiful at the moment. So if you can get the surgery done, I wouldn't wait to see if it can repair itself. Luckily, Sophie is more like a cat than a dog and has always spent more time sleeping than running around and playing but she can no longer do stairs or gonfor long walks (snail's pace and only 10 mins maximum). In her case though, the tear was deemed mild and she was deemed unfit for surgery but if your baby is healthy and you find a certified surgeon you trust, I wouldn't put it off too long! |

| Oh my goodness! This is so difficult. I have been reading SO much, and there seem to be the same amount to recommend the non surgical route, as the knee surgery. We would do anything for our little girl, but are concerned about keeping her so inactive after the surgery. It's VERY challenging keeping her restrained and calm now! She is only on leash outside...and, I have just gotten some play pens for her to be in when we are some. She shoots off our laps if she's relaxing on the couch and gets excited. Our vet is on the fence about which route is better for her...especially heading into the summer with lots of vacation and summer plans. |
