Open mouth and excessive licking Hello Im new to the forum and figured I'd reach out to those who know the most about our little fur babies. I have a 7 year old Yorkie that is a bit in the heavy side. He's been a healthy fella until recently. I boarded him for 10 days about a month ago just as an FYI. Two weeks ago, I noticed my Yorkie not eating as well. Two days later, this progressed. He didn't eat, barely drank, wasn't pooping and was quite lethargic. I figuered a late onset of kennel cough as he sometimes gets after boarding. When he barked, I noticed it was a bit horse. I brought him to the vet on day 2 of no poop. At this time, there was also excessive licking of his lips, wet beard and a open mouth open resting (no panting). I took him to the vet the next morning, which he is extremely anxious about and he had a fever as I suspected. They gave him a fluid injection and some medicine for nausea. The vet said he might have a slight case of pancreatitis too. Two days later, my little guy was good as new. Fast forward another week and he's acting strange again - hiding in odd places, licking his lips like crazy, constantly has his mouth open with his tongue peaking out. He's eating, drinking and popping fine, but i am worried. I was poking around and noticed what appears to be a small pea-sized lump under his lower jaw. He didn't seem to want me to touch it much. He does have dental issues and is in need of a cleaning but money is tight. Could he be in pain from his teeth? Are the two instances connected or just a coincidence. No vets except emergency rooms are open tomorrow so I'm hoping this isn't an ER situation that can wait until Monday. Any insight???? I'm worried sick!

This was buried. I don't have any suggestions for you, but I was sure hoping that someone like Ann, lilymae or Lady Jane had some answers or advice.

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | You really do need to get this poor baby to a vet ASAP. When they stop eating, it's a major and validating sign that something is for sure wrong. The open mouth and drooling is not normal at all. His mouth and that lump needs to be checked out thoroughly as that could def be the problem. *Please* get the dental work done - if you've ever had any amount of tooth pain, you should know just how excruciating it really is - that's no different for an animal .

So he is eating, drinking and going to the bathroom, just not as regularly as he does. I suspect his teeth are bothering him. He ended up having a decent amount of water yesterday that made me comfortable to wait u til his regular vet opens this morning, but he hasn't had anything for about 12 hours now. I gave him a pretty rigid treat yesterday and he seemed to enjoy it albeit slowly. Today I wanted to entice him to come out of his crate with a cookie and he took it but wasn't his giddy self. He peed - very yellow. I suspect a little dehydration so I'm going to ask the vet to give him some hydration. What can the vet do for him right now? I need to get the dental done but j I assume it might be a little wait (this is a large pet hospital). Any of your pups have dental issues? I'm worried he might lose all his teeth and his personality change. I've heard some horror stories although I don't have much of a choice. I'm hoping they can give him some pain medicine and maybe some antibiotics should an infection be lurking. This weekend has been so stressful - 1 hour til the vet opens!

Excessive licking and drooling is often a sign of severe pain. Hopefully you already made it to a vet. How is he today?

So I took him to the vet this morning and he became quite aggressive in the waiting room (which isn't like him). He's usually very anxious at the vet, which he was, but added on aggressiveness. I know this is a sign he is in pain. His regular vet saw him (which I love because she's great and thorough). She doesn't think its his teeth, although she says they are pretty crummy looking. She felt around and his tummy was quite sensitive. He let our a few yelps when she poked around. She suggested x-rays and complete blood work. My dog did so well! She mentioned pancreatitis or hepatitis. All the blood work came back great and the X-ray didn't show any obstructions. She did a rectal exam and said he had quite a bit in his colon and lots of gas in his belly. She says he is in quite a bit of pain in his stomach. They gave him some hydration, some anti nausea medicine and some pain medicine via injection. They sent me home with antacids, antibiotics and pain medicine. I gave him his first dose of antibiotics (clavamox) and he threw up a little bit of yellow (bile?) 4 hours later. Made him some chicken and rice and he refuses to eat. I called the vet back and she said he might be so nauseous coupled with the strong antibiotics which caused vomit. She suggested I give him another dose along with some baby food if possible and see how he tolerates. I guess he was running a fever as well so still not comfortable with the fact that he is sick and we don't know whats going on. Vet says his open mouth and excessive drooling is most likely from pain and nausea. Hoping this clears up because I miss my little hyper buddy running around. Any experience with Clavamox? I read its notorious for causing vomiting.

They didn't pay much attention to it really. Said it might be matted hair actually since he's been drooling excessively.
