| My Yorkie is sick please help Hi first time posting here. I bought my Yorkie at 8 months old 2 months ago. She's always had loose stools. Recently she has been trying to pee and only drops come out. She will try to pee 8-10 times in a minute. So took her to the vet. The vet tried to get a urine sample for a urine analysis but because her bladder is so small and she is constantly emptying it there was nothing there. He put her on antibiotics for a UTI just to be safe. He also took X-rays of her bladder to check for stones and there were none. All clear. He also said it looks like she is going into her first heat and that might be part of the problem. She is licking her vulva so much it's very irritated. I need to buy her a cone I guess to keep her from licking? Next problem-the loose stools. The did a fecal test and she is positive for giardia!!! I am so freaked out about this!!!!!!! I have two young children and she has licked and kissed all of our mouths. We try to not let her but she sneaks the kisses in lol. So now I am washing everything in our house, all bedding, spraying the couches with Lysol, mopping the floors, washing the kennel and dog bedding. But what if she is still shedding the spores? How long to I have to clean like this? She has only taken two doses of flagyl so far. Everyone is scared to let her in my house now. We love her so much I just can't believe all the problems she has came with. I bought her not fixed, still 4 extra puppy teeth. The lady said she was house trained and she for sure isn't. So many issue and now we are madly in love with her. I sure hope things settle down a little and things get easier with her. We plan to get her fixed but have to make sure she isn't in heat first. Any advise about giardia and the UTI and possible first heat? Thank you Last edited by Blondiehm; 08-13-2016 at 01:22 PM. Reason: Spelling |

| They can be born with Giardia. It's unfortunate, but it's quite common. Someone on here battled with it for quite awhile. My chews didn't have an issue after the first round of antibiotics. I don't like Chewie's butt being dirty, and Monty's owner gave me a lot of advice. Keep cleaning, wash your hands, keep her little doings clean from a wipe or whatever you prefer to use, and keep on top of the antibiotics. The puppy teeth being retained is quite normal. I gave chews a himalayan chew treat at night (be SURE to supervise!) and she had four retained (8) teeth herself. By the time the vet spayed her 3 weeks ago she only had her canines left. Don't think that it was the breeder's fault, as practically every yorkie has this issue, of course there are exceptions to the rule. I'm sorry they can't get a good sample to test. I don't know what to say about this. As for the not being trained, lay out a ton of pads and put a spray on them. Praise her when she goes. She'll get there. These guys are notoriously stubborn. |

| What an unfortunate start to your ownership. Poor gal. Quite some time ago I received a very sick puppy (a large breed Komondor intended to be a guardian dog to my goats and sheep) and I just didn't realize she was sick until too late, which happened very quickly. I thought her loose stools were from a dietary change and I knew I was going to have messes to clean up with a puppy- I didn't know what was normal for puppyhood- I had only had a small breed adult dog (as an adult) for ten years. She had some issues with her internal development from poor breeding so she was not destined to make it unfortunately but among other issues she also had ghiardia. The vet did everything he could, I was so upset, I had given the nurses permission for her to be transferred to the major emergency hospital in town but the Dr called me and advised against it, said she was not formed correctly inside and that she could not get better, she died only moments later, it was really tragic. We have six small children. I was the primary care provider for the puppy though, the official mess cleaner. I think I am very careful with my cross contamination cleaning behaviors, I was trained at a dental school with infection control practices etc so I don't know how it happened but I contracted ghiardia. I didn't know it either. It seemed completely seperate, I never thought I would have gotten sick from the puppy. I was terribly terribly ill for a month and a half before the Dr's figured out what was wrong with me. I continued with my generally infection control minded habits and good hand washing practices and nobody else got sick but by the end of it I was sleeping on the couch sipping Gatorade and my blood work was not looking so good. Anyhow they eventually figured it out and treatment was typical and easy. That said, ghiardia is very common, not difficult to treat and in America with antibiotics, anthrlmentics and Gatorade we really don't have to worry. Bleach your grass, bleach your shoes, wash your hands, make and sure your kids wash their hands and keep her contained properly so you can clean properly until she is done with her treatment. Watch for her stool to firm up and re test her if your vet reccomends. Watch for signs and symptoms in yourself and your children, and I'm sure you will be fine. She is lucky you are bringing her back to health. Perhaps the indoor accidents will cease once she is all better.

| I have dealt with Giardia on quite a few occasions, and according to my vet, this is a VERY common issue with many puppies. While the parasite is zoonotic, I read on the CDC website, that is a bit more difficult to transfer from canine to human as opposed to human to human. Here is what they state on their site: "The risk of humans acquiring Giardia infection from dogs or cats is small. The exact type of Giardia that infects humans is usually not the same type that infects dogs and cats." That being said, if you, or your children, start exhibit any symptoms, go to the doctor and take a stool test. The common antibiotic used is Tindamax, which is one dose (4 pills, but very powerful). The parasite usually clears in dogs after the first round of medication. Just make sure you wash your hands vigorously after handling feces, and if any should fall on a surface, use a mixture of Bleach with water (3/4 cup of bleach to 1 gallon of water) and spray the surface. Hope that helps and good luck Quote:
