Default Advise, opinions, prayers anything

Ok I need ideas ever sense Callie had surgery in June her stomach has just not been right. It got really bad after her second to last sedation to take X-rays she was throwing up at least 5 times a day and we went to the vet got an anti nausea shot and medicine and she was put on a bland diet with no issues and we weaned back into regular food and everything was fine for a few weeks then it was back to occasional throwing up and all I had done was introduce her goats milk probiotic back in because her gas was getting bad. So I stopped the goats milk and she is still throwing up at least every other day. The only treats she is getting are Cheerios and rarely those. I also have to wrap her thyroid pill in a little cheese for her to eat it. She has a vet appointment Friday to remove her staples and she was going to be getting her Lepto shot so obviously Im going to let the vet know and everything. I'm just at a loss for what could be the problem. I'm not sure what to be worried about or even what the vet should do or test for. I fear her being put on prescription food because she is so picky and normally has to have food rotated after a couple months and if the pieces are to big she won't touch it. Advise, opinions, or prayers really anything would be great.

Poor little Callie - not very nice for either of you, I'm sorry.

The only thing I can think of...and it's always...whenever I give Harry cheese, even just a tiny little bit while I'm cooking, it makes him throw up.

Obviously I never give him any, any more

Oh no poor Callie, I know you must be besides yourself. Has she been on an antibiotic? You say you were giving her goats milk probiotic? I can't imagine that was harming her, I would think it would help whatever was going on. Is the vomit more yellow or is she vomiting her food? What is she eating and how long has she been eating it? Some foods are touted as being healthy, but actually can be very hard for dogs to digest. For example, brown rice is very difficult for dogs to digest, but humans prefer it in dog food over white rice. Processed corn is very easy for dogs to digest, but humans would prefer rice or potato's. Some potatoes are very hard for dogs to digest. Yorkies are prone to digestional difficulties, and so it may be hard to diagnose. I would definitely call my vet about it. Also, I wouldn't think you want the lepo shot while she's experiencing this vomiting, it's just another unknown factor. Have you tried a bland diet of chicken and white rice? Melting/softening the cheese in microwave allows you to use a very tiny amount of cheese. Have you ever given her regular unsweetened Yogurt? Do she tolerate milk products or do they give her gas? Also, could anyone else in the family be giving her anything?

Poor Callie, and you. I can imagine how frustrating this is. As Nancy wrote, I would hold the Lepto vacc until you figure this out.

Has she had any changes in her regular diet that coincide with the vomiting? I think you are doing the right thing holding all treats until this is worked out.

Praying there will be a simple solution.

Poor baby. Maybe the sedation upset her stomach. I hope she feels better soon. Keep us updated.

Can you get the thyroid medicine in liquid form so you can just squirt it in her mouth with a dropper?

I would ask about Hills ID and giving her flagyl for a few days. Plain yogurt is also a good idea.

I was reading through this when I was waiting to get my flu shot but couldn't respond because it's just to hard for me to reply on my phone but it really got me thinking and I think it's the food. She had been on Royal Canin Yorkie for months a few before the surgery and three months after the surgery but her poo was very soft and runnyish on it so I switched to something else which was the wellness toy breed with brown rice which I don't really think was in any of the foods she has been on before and it could just be the food because she started having the issues I think around the time I switched foods but just never put it together for some reason. She was great with no issues when on the bland diet of chicken and white rice so it makes sense to be the food. I picked up a new food when we were out today to try. The vomit normally is not yellow more kinda of white I think that's why I thought it was the goats milk. This morning it was the piece of cheese and her pill with a few pieces of dog food and it was pretty quick after eating. It normally seems to be in the morning but it's not yellow like bile.

I wonder if the cheese could be doing that? My grand dog has pancreatitis, and he can't have any types of treats, so we have to put his food in his mouth lean his mouth back and massage his throat till he swallows, sometime dripping in a few drips of water. At first it was really hard, but after a while the dog knew I wasn't going to give up and was more cooperative. Since thyroid pills don't have a strong taste, another option would be smashing them up and mixing them with something she could eat, but I'm not sure what she can eat without causing problems. They do make unsalted turkey slices at deli and maybe a thin slice wrapped around a pill?

Poor Callie and poor you. It's so frustrating, isn't it? When you can't exactly pinpoint but KNOW something is off your with baby.

Wellness never fared well with any of our dogs for some reason, either. I remember finding moldy looking stuff in a bag of Wellness my dads dogs had too a while back. Not to say it's a BAD food, I've known dogs who do well on it, but ours just didn't.

A few months ago, Jackson had an upset tummy and threw up 3-4 times throughout one weekend. It's really rare for him to be sick like that, he has always been able to switch foods easily, etc. But the two things I had done different were feeding the Rachel Ray canned food and feeding MilkBone dental treats. I went to open a new tub of the RR food (I had a box of 8 of them) and the food smelled NASTY, it was like rancid and just... not right. So obviously I threw it away along with the rest of the box. It was odd because all the other tubs of food 'smelled' fine and he HAD eaten the RR wet food in the past. But the only two things I could attribute it to was those, so we just stopped feeding both and never will again to be safe. I was prepared to take him to the vet but once we stopped these and he ate chicken/rice for two days, he got better.

Jackson's been back on Acana because it's easily accessible to us (the Farmina wasn't; only sold in a store far away and Chewy.com is always sold out of our sizes) and even though I was bummed with the ingredient additions of lots of lentils and peas, honestly, he just does best on the 'Singles' line - the duck and pork formulas. He seems to do best overall on really simple formulas, one or two meat sources, nothing terribly complex. I forget if you ever tried the Singles line with Callie.

Anyway I am rambling. It could very well be the food or it could be something else. RX food wouldn't be the end of the world if that's what it comes down to, even though they're so costly, I know.

Well she has had little bits of cheese sense she was a pup and never had issues. I have a pill shooter that just drops it down that back of her throat but I feel bad doing that twice a day. The other method doesn't work for her no matter how long you wait she's more stubborn then me lol. They used to be flavored but when I went to pick up her refill it wasn't the flavored ones. No vomiting today but I pulled the old food yesterday and it's mostly been chicken and rice.

A food may be well tolerated, if everything is fine, but once there is a problem it might add to the problem, I know milk products can be hard to digest. For example, milk products are one of the first things you give up if you have the flu or a stomach bug, but most of the time they are no problem. Was she given her pill today? If no vomiting then you can probably say the cheese wasn't doing it.

I don't really have an issue with prescription food as far as anything but her not eating it or the pieces being small enough where she will eat it. She was on Acana before and it did ok and we tried a sample of the duck and pear the biggest issues are the size of the pieces other then that it was great she loved it. I have the only larger yorkie who has to have dog food pieces that are the perfect size for a 2 pounder lol.
