| Gizmo has pancreatitis... Oh gosh...woke up at 6:30 this morning .. Cookie had awakened me. Found Gizmo walking around with diarrhea in my bathroom. I picked him up and found all this mucous hanging from his mouth....so I cleaned him up and put him in his bed. Then went to get paper towels to start cleaning up the floor. What a mess ... apparently he vomited for some time prior to the diarrhea as there was clear slime all over. You could not see it on the tile. He had stopped at that point, so I got all the pups fed and then off to the vet we went. On exam his tummy was not painful and he did not seem to be dehydrated. We discussed options and decided that blood work and a snap CPLi should be done. Ugh...positive snap test and his blood work showed significant dehydration. This is the second pup I have had that showed dehydration in blood work prior to showing symptoms. The moral to that story? Don't avoid blood work ever! These little ones can be so sick without us realizing how bad it is. He is now in ICU at Gulf Coast Vet Specialists in Houston. They have him on IVs and are doing an ultrasound today. This is his second time there in a year. I feel terrible. I had groomed him yesterday and in the middle of it, he got upset and really kind of spazzed out on me. He is usually so good for grooming I don't know now if maybe the stress from that set him off....OR if he was maybe brewing something and was uncomfortable. He has been eating well and had no diarrhea prior to this morning. If only they could talk. Poor Gizmo...he is 13 now and a frail little guy. He is blind...so it kills me to see him go through this and be in a strange place.

Gizmo is in the best of hands now and I know he's being kept comfortable and is not nauseated or hurting now and his pancreas probably already has started healing and he'll no doubt be coming home before you know it. What's so awful, Linda, and you well know this, in many homes Gizmo would have to endure a whole weekend of diarrhea, vomiting, refusing food and dehydration ahead of him before his owner would "rush" him to the vet Monday, if he lasted until then. Thankfully, that's never going to be the case with any dogs in your care. You are a great mommie for any dog, but especially those little ones that are frail or old or especially needy. You don't hesitate to get your dogs excellent care fast and that makes all the difference, especially to the dog. I hope and pray little Giz is on the mend and feeling better and home before long. Try not to worry.

| I just don't understand how they get pancreatitis if they are eating the proper diet. Zoey has had this twice and it was my fault. I'm so sorry that little Gizmo is so sick. Hope he will be able to come home soon.

| Poor little Gizmo. I pray he will be able to come home soon and that he will recover quickly. Thank you for the warning that dehydration may not be detected by physical symptoms alone.

Gizmo has a history of calcium oxylate stones. When he had pancreatitis last year I opted to do a nutritional consult and home cook for him; but he had issues with the home cooked diet after a few months, so he went back on the rx food .. Urinary SO. He has been ok until suddenly this morning. It is not always the fault of the owner. Trust me when I tell you they don't get anything in this home that is a well known food to cause pancreatitis.

| Gizmo is a Yorkie Haven pup. He came to me as an owner turn in when he was 8. She said it was because she was pregnant and Gizmo did not care for the first child. What she neglected to tell me was that he was going blind due to PRA and he was passing blood in his urine due to bladder stones. Still with me after all these years....which is fine by me. He is a little love.

| Although diet (high fat or high protein) can be triggers to setting pancreatitis off, they really don't know all the causes. It can smolder for a very long time and some nutritionists take a very strict dietary approach. I remember when Barney had pancreatitis four years ago, I had done a consult with a vet nutritionist and she told me to avoid high sugar foods like bananas. In Gizmo's case the nutritional approach is complicated by the oxalate stones. Sometimes higher fat or higher meat diets are better for stones and may not be also appropriate for pancreatitis prevention.

| I pray that Gizmo gets better soon. He's very lucky that he wound up with you, and that like all of your pups, you are so devoted to his physical and emotional well-being.

| Thank you everyone! They called me earlier but I am just now having a chance to sit down and update. His ultrasound did show some mild inflammation of the pancreas. He is on IV fluids and meds....the vomiting has stopped but he still has the diarrhea. They are withholding food for now. I will update in the morning after I get an update. I am hopeful that it was caught early and he won't be there too long.

| Glad to hear his vomiting has stopped. Praying he can come home tomorrow or Monday. This is what scares me. We are really strict with diet here, but I've read that even things like stress can be a trigger.
