What a mess ... apparently he vomited for some time prior to the diarrhea as there was clear slime all over. You could not see it on the tile. He had stopped at that point, so I got all the pups fed and then off to the vet we went. On exam his tummy was not painful and he did not seem to be dehydrated. We discussed options and decided that blood work and a snap CPLi should be done. Ugh...positive snap test and his blood work showed significant dehydration. This is the second pup I have had that showed dehydration in blood work prior to showing symptoms. The moral to that story? Don't avoid blood work ever! These little ones can be so sick without us realizing how bad it is.

He is now in ICU at Gulf Coast Vet Specialists in Houston. They have him on IVs and are doing an ultrasound today. This is his second time there in a year.

I feel terrible. I had groomed him yesterday and in the middle of it, he got upset and really kind of spazzed out on me. He is usually so good for grooming I don't know now if maybe the stress from that set him off....OR if he was maybe brewing something and was uncomfortable. He has been eating well and had no diarrhea prior to this morning. If only they could talk. Poor Gizmo...he is 13 now and a frail little guy. He is blind...so it kills me to see him go through this and be in a strange place.
Oh, poor Gizmo! That's really sad - he probably was sore and maybe even hurting or nauseated at the groomer already but unless they show us some definitive symptoms, how could you possibly know? Still, I know that awful feeling of guilt - why couldn't I tell something was wrong? But, the truth is, they hide everything until something starts coming up or out or they are not eating or are limping or something like that. I wish so much they could just somehow tell us when things are just beginning to get bad for them rather than waiting until they are so bad off!

Gizmo is in the best of hands now and I know he's being kept comfortable and is not nauseated or hurting now and his pancreas probably already has started healing and he'll no doubt be coming home before you know it. What's so awful, Linda, and you well know this, in many homes Gizmo would have to endure a whole weekend of diarrhea, vomiting, refusing food and dehydration ahead of him before his owner would "rush" him to the vet Monday, if he lasted until then. Thankfully, that's never going to be the case with any dogs in your care. You are a great mommie for any dog, but especially those little ones that are frail or old or especially needy. You don't hesitate to get your dogs excellent care fast and that makes all the difference, especially to the dog. I hope and pray little Giz is on the mend and feeling better and home before long. Try not to worry.
