| parvo My 7 month old fully immunized puppy, Piper, has parvo. Her shots were completed over 3 months ago. Hopefully we caught it early enough. She just started vomiting and one episode of liquid stool before I took her in. She had fluids going within 5 minutes of a positive test. I'm scared and worried of course, have shed a few tears but know she's in good hands, even if they're not mine. My question is now what? I have multiple dogs at home. From a 13 year old lab down to 3 litters of foster pups from 4-6 weeks and their mom's. I also have a 4 month old foster puppy who's had all immunizations and other assorted fosters. I've arranged to have the carpet steam cleaned and plan on spaying with trifecta (sp?) after, including all the fabtic furniture. My washer and dryer both have antibacterial settings and have been working overtime. I have a friend willing to keep Piper for the next month after she gets out of the hospital if that's truly necessary. Everything I've read and the techs and vet say she'll shed for about a month after. I really don't want her to go away even for a short period but have to think of my other dogs. I WON'T be giiving up my Piper. What type of setup do you think would work to protect everyone. Everyone is fully immunized except the puppies, but look how well that worked. Two litters have recieved 1 dose of neopar 2 weeks ago at 5 weeks of age and I was planning on giving them a 5 way at 7 weeks, this tuesday and the other litter will be 5 weeks on monday and is supposed to get their first neopar. There hasn't been any contact with Piper and the puppies. I'm rather picky about who has contact with my babies but that didn't seem to help my Piper. How can I protect my babies and get my Piper home? |

| So sorry to hear this. Some vaccines may not work on an individual, or the strain of Parvo is different than the protection provided by the vaccine. Dogs with Liver Shunt do not benefit from vaccines, as the liver is where the vaccine gets activated/processed. Praying for your little one... ETA; Ask your vet about doing a single Parvo vac on the puppies, I believe with only one flavor they will build a stronger immunity...

| The puppies are already isolated but not the mom's so I guess that doesn't really help does it? Neopar tonight for the unvaccinated and would you give the 5 way at 7 weeks or another neopar? I"ll order some virkon tonight. Do you know of any lab that does environmental testing for parvo. I'd like to have documentation that it's clean. How long before the dogs can use the yard? |

| sorry for all the questions. Just read it and it sounded like an interrogation but I've always been so careful and it didn't do any good. I'm stuck at work and can't do anything and there's so much to do at home. |

| They say this stuff lasts in the ground up to 2 years....it almost broke my business completely apart....spent WELL over $25,000.00, and shut down breeding for 2 years....actually a year and a half. (The vet could not believe I had parvo as I cleaned my home and crates, etc with strong solution of bleach every day....she had seen my home and just could not believe she was seeing parvo in my babies!) I continue to this day, to spray every level surface, inside and out, with Virkon...once a month all crates, carriers, etc are put in the driveway and thoroughly sprayed down with Virkon and allowed to air dry. Once a month, the floors are sprayed with Virkon....and the walls are wiped down in the nursery with Virkon. Once a week, all bedding, toys, etc are washed in Virkon....all eating and water bowls are sterilized in the dishwasher, then sprayed with Virkon and allowed to air dry. I bought washtubs and I dunk all "hard" toys in that Virkon solution. No dogs come onto this property and none of these dogs leave this property. No one is allowed on this property until the pups are 11 weeks old and have had NeoPar at 4 weeks, 5 way at 8 weeks and again at 11 weeks. People out looking at babies to buy a Yorkie is what brought that horrific disease onto my property around 8 years ago, and it almost killed me. THAT will never happen to me again, not like that. My fabulous vet did manage to save all but one puppy....they threw everything at those babies but the kitchen sink....blood transfusions to immediately provide immunity, research drugs, etc....we even did accupuncture to stimulate their immune systems, and my vet who is a religious lady, they had prayer circles over each baby every day.... | Personally, I would get the baby pups off of the property immediately. The disease is all over the place by now and I would not trust one dose of anything in this circumstance, especially since they are so young.

| I'm not sure if you vaccinated her yourself and at what times, but any error in protocol or handling (by you or a vet) can make the vaccine ineffective.

| The puppies were with me because I have never had parvo at my home. I don't want to move them at this stage in case they are infected. It would just possibly contaminate another foster home . Piper was immunized by the vet. She's the only yorkie I have ever bought, the rest are all rescues. I ordered the virkon and it should be here monday. I'll also check the local feed stores so maybe I can get it sooner. Just didn't want a delay if I couldn't find it. We think that she was exposed by a vet tech who placed 2 dogs with the rescue.. They had some shots but were to young to be fully immunized. She has since admitted that they "might" have been exposed to parvo but she thought they would be okay. They both developed parvo and were PTS. We are now working on increasing our isolation time. We will never again accept any dogs from this person for rescue. I have some beautiful sweet dogs ready for adoption but will now be keeping them for another 2 weeks to make sure they remain healthy. The last thing we want to do is adopt out sick dogs, dogs that can make this seeming parvo epidemic worse. |

| Did your vet tell you its safe for those dogs to go to their new homes in 2 weeks because it seems you need longer than that

| I'm so sorry you are going through this nightmare. I will pray for Piper and all of your babies. I have learned so much from both Judy and Crystal, and they have given you very valuable information.

| Checking in to see how your pups are doing this am. How is little Piper? I read your post about what to give at 7 weeks....I would give the 5 way at 8 weeks...give a little more space between that NeoPar and the 5 way.....They will be absolutely protected for the 3 weeks between the NeoPar and the start of their 5 way, if they are not already infected with the virus. The NeoPar will override the immunity provided by the 5 way....I would give the 5 way at 8, 11, 14 weeks. Praying you caught this litter soon enough. You are absolutely coprrect to not move the babies from your home....you are essentially quarantined with this disease on your premisis. Isolate the litter and their mom in a space and let NO one go hear them. We ran around my home like we were Haz-Mat team members....gloves, shoe covers, disposable gowns.....put a shallow tray with a bath towel soaked in about an inch deep puddlle of Virkon....walk through this before you enter the room where the litter is. This is the same stuff people had to walk through when mad cow disease was discovered and everyone coming into the United States from Europe, had to walk through trays of this solution. I had this solution at ALL my doors and everyone had to walk through it if they came into the house from the yard....this is NOT overkill believe me.....this will spread through your house and "lay in wait" for every litter of babies that is born or brought into the area. |
