| Emmie turned 1 year old on Thursday!! The last few months dealing with the CCL tear and the LP has been difficult. I even took her to a third surgeon for an opinion but it basically was the same as the first two, except she was against a TPLO completely because she didn't like it for small dogs. At that point I just kept her activity very restricted and carried her around a lot. After the first few weeks she seemed back to normal most of the time, but I still tried as best as I could to keep her as calm as possible. I even am careful playing tug of war with her bc she locks those back legs and is pulling so hard on the toy if she twists.... I can only imagine. She has developed some separation anxiety which I am sure is partly my fault for carrying her around everywhere. The last month her pain has come back a little stronger than it had been, a little worse in the afternoons and evenings. The vet said the LP in her left leg is about the same but in her right it is worse which I am sure is because of the CCL tear. She takes Novox daily with Tramadol for breakthrough pain and that controls it for the most part. When she is hurting I will ask her if she wants her medicine and she gets really excited. Sad, but I am so grateful she takes it easily! So now we have an appt with her regular vet and with the orthopedic surgeon since she is finally 1 year old so we can figure out the plan. She does have mild tracheal collapse but no problems with that so far. She had a great birthday though!! And she has brought me so much joy, I couldn't imagine life without her. I am grateful for all the advice I received. The tips helped out a lot. |

| Emmie is precious! I pray that surgery will heal your little girl and that she is soon free from pain. Happy birthday, sweet little one.

| My dog had the procedure with the suture. They fixed the knee at the same time. I don't know why they told you they can't fix the knee.

I can't speak re the other method(s) for fixing a CCL tear, but I can **guess** (so take this with a grain of salt) why they wouldn't prefer to do a TPLO on a dog that is still growing. The position of that cut on the top of the tibia and the degree of rotation of that bone fragment is very precisely measured. What might be correct measurements for a pup at 7 months would not be ideal when the tibia (and the femur above it) has reached it's final length/size.

I have read many of your posts on this forum and I really respect your opinion on things but please know I didn't just sit back and do nothing. I took her to three surgeons who said that surgery would not be able to be done at that time because she was too young and her growth plates hadn't closed yet. I agree it is very sad for her and I hate it. I don't know what else I could have done differently.

Just to update, we met with the surgeon(s) and although she is a year old now, her growth plates aren't closed yet. Apparently they aren't magically finished closing the day she turns 1. So we will follow up in 6 weeks. As far as whats going on with her.... Her knees are locking up at random times lately, where she is almost frozen, she can't move at all. it just seems to be getting worse. I saw little knee braces for dogs online idk if that would help, the surgeon kind of laughed and said they don't work work well but it wouldn't hurt! So I think I am going to try!! The surgeon we liked the most (yes he is board certified and even taught at A&M) said her condition has progressed to the point where it may be too late to do surgery but he isn't ruling it out yet. It just seems unfair. Can't do the surgery because shes too young, but when she finally can have it, its too late. Sad irony. So if yall will just keep your fingers crossed and maybe pray that in 6 weeks she will be able to have the surgery, and in the meantime the pain will GO AWAY!! And everything will work out.
