| Any suggestion for our little girl with bad legs Hi I have a little girl yorkie whos 10lb and four years old I'm just looking for some advice. She seems to be struggling with her back legs I have read up about luxating patella on here. On Monday we took her to the vets and they surgested X-rays on the Wednesday which we did but X-rays have come back clear with a very slight luxating patella on her left leg, we was told she didn't need any operation or any painkillers. My worry is she is still struggling with her walking and getting up steps, we was told to start building up her exercise to build muscle around leg which might stop it getting any worse. We stupidly stopped the walks in the winter because this was when we started to see her struggling. I forgot she is on Glucosamine to help her joints been on these since Christmas. Has anybody got any other surgestion that we can try to help her. Thanks for any surgestion forgot to say we also live in England |

| Maybe a second opinion from an orthopedic specialist... problems going upstairs can also indicate a spine issue. Very mild LP shouldn't cause anything too noticeable, and would be intermittant at most. Did your vet also evaluate her hips and spine on the xray?

| Thank you for your quick reply Yes checked them all this was the second vet we had been to in two weeks but only one lot of X-rays first vet could find nothing wrong but second vet we insisted with a heavy heart didnt like the idea she would be put out for the xrays but felt she might need them. He seems to think she might be playing on it because of the attention lifting up and down stairs and chairs I can't see it my self I know they are little characters but I think that might be a step to far lol. Forgot to mention we have three yorkies |

| If she's at all overweight, this can make leg problems worse, so keeping her on the lean side would help. Haha, yes I can see her milking the situation for attention... lol, but, too, maybe she strained something and just needs a few weeks of TLC and spoiling till she feels up to being herself once again. I don't allow mine to jump onto furniture or beds... they wait till I pick them up and put them there, and will bark when they want down. Some use doggy stairs... just a precaution as overextention can also make LP worse. I hope your little one feels better soon...

| I'm unclear of what the second vet did about the x-rays and thought? That second vet didn't want x-rays? What was the heavy heart about? I'm not quite clear on that. I would be very careful about thinking my dog was playing for attention if they are having leg problems or showing any symptoms of struggling to walk! I would get clear x-rays and get a respected orthopedic veterinary surgeon's opinion if I had to drive 500 miles for it. It sounds as if that dog is in pain or struggling with lack of muscle control or ability to walk well. Were any lab tests done or any neurological examinations/testings done? Your dog could - could - have a variety of things making walking difficult but pursue this with an excellent vet who will get clear films using some sedation if he has to and then check for other things that could be causing this. It doesn't have to be orthopedic - can be other diseases and things causing this. What other signs or symptoms does she have? Does she rest well and play and bark, eat normally? Any nausea, vomiting, diarrhea? Is she restless, agitated at time or does she sleep a lot? Any walking off center or leaning to one side, shaking, shaking her head or trying to isolate herself? Is she quiet or aggressive?

No there is no other symptoms she plays normal, eating fine everything else is normal she is not overweight she's just a large lovable yorkie. I also would go to the end of the earth for one of my animals that's why I have seen two vets in two different practises. Thank you kjc so do I |

| I completely agree. It sounds like back problems or even arthritis. Two of my girls had LP 4 and didn't have those symptoms. Please, take her to an orthopedic Vet. to get the cause and what has to be done.
