| cataract surgery My little 2 1/2 year old Phoebe had cataract surgery on tuesday. I was totally shocked when I picked her up on wednesday morning. Her poor little eye is so swollen and sore looking... I guess I didn't expect it to look so bad. I also didn't expect them to shave as much of her hair as they did. They started at her beard & shaved the whole side of her head and face to behind her ears. They even cut off her topknot! Poor baby looks like a chemo patient. I was so overwhelmed by her appearance and all of the post op instructions that I didn't ask why they had to shave so far back on her head. I know it's just hair and will grow back, but I can't understand why they had to cut off her topknot! I was warned about the amount of meds/eye drops she would be on, but it's still overwhelming. Thank God I can be home with her. I can't imagine how hard it would be to have to leave her alone and try to manage her meds if I were working and couldn't be with her! I tried to post her post op pics but can get them to work. Lori |

| Sorry you are going through this with your pup. More than likely the hair was shaved to prevent irritation and infection to the eye. Praying that she recovers quickly.

| I'm happy Phoebe's surgery went well, and that you are home to take care of her. Having gone through eye problems with one of my boys, I know the meds and care can require constant attention. Her hair will grow back, but I understand being bummed about the shaving. Some doctors prefer to shave to prevent any hair from getting in the eye. There are a couple of beautiful boys here who had half of their mustaches shaved for surgery. Their hair grew back quickly and they are just as good looking as ever. To post pictures, you may have to resize them. Let us know if you need help. Wishing Phoebe a speedy recovery.

| I know first hand what you are going thru. My Korki had eye surgery twice. I was totally overwhelmed by all the meds and spacing of time between. Glad to hear little Phoebe is doing well. |

| Cataract Omg! I feel so bad for you and your baby and pray she will heal well and see again soon. I hate to say this but I have never heard of the cataract eye looking swollen and sore, nor of the facial hair being shaved. My boy had this surgery and he was not shaved and his eye looked fairly normal afterwards. The one part I will agree with you on is the demanding and lengthy aftercare. It was brutal and a full time job for several weeks. The constant medicating and wearing the cone 24/7 was so hard on my dog. Hang in there, good aftercare will make for a perfect recovery. For the meds we made a chart on squared paper with med names, times required and dates, and marked them off when each med was applied. Otherwise it was impossible to keep track. I and others found that the dogs became scared of the eye meds and ran away when we approached. The good news is that the hair will grow back and the swelling will be reduced with time and meds. I am sure all will be well as the follow up visits are many after surgery and the eye vet will ensure healing is progressing according to plan. I am sure others who have been through this will post with support and comments. Praying for you and your baby girl and hope she is feeling and looking better very soon. |

| I can speak from experience because my shih tzu had cataract surgery a little over a month ago. I don't understand why they had to shave so much. They only shaved over Oliver's eye. Well I guess different places have different methods. As for the swelling and soreness it will go away. You have to keep up with the meds and if you do you are going to see wonderful results. It's been a little over a month now and Oliver's eye looks just great. The vet said it takes about a month for everything to heal 100% btw Oliver is about the same age as Phoebe. |

| Thanks for all the responses. Phoebe's eye is less swollen today, which is a relief! Unfortunately, her eye was too small for the vet to use the artificial lens (she's only 3#'s). The vet warned me ahead of time that the smallest lens might be too big for her tiny eye. He tells me that her distance vision will be fine, but her close up vision will not be as good as if she had the lens. The med chart is a great idea. I too made one as soon as I got home with all of the meds. I knew I wouldn't be able to remember it any other way. I would love some advice on resizing the pics so I can post them. Lori |

For picture resizing, read this post, which includes the maximum file size and suggestions for photo editors if you don't already have one: http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/yor...orkietalk.html If you are using Windows, you can also use MS Paint to resize. On Mac, the photo previewer > tools allow resizing.

| When my little Papillion (R.I.P.) had cateract surgery on both eyes at the same time, they didn't shave her, and her eyes were not swollen. Depends on the doctor I guess whether they shave or not, and I'm sure each dog reacts differently to surgery too. Her hair will grow quickly. The only thing I wasn't crazy about was putting eye drops for such a long time (before and after) and watching that the whites of her eye don't get bloodshot.

| Phoebe What a sweet little baby she is. She does look sad with the little black eye! That will soon go away and the hair will be beautiful again. She does look comfortable and i am so happy she is doing well. A pity she could not get the lens but she will still see well. Hang on there, this will be over before long! Get well soon little one. |

| Phoebe is wearing the dreaded "party hat" as my vet's office calls them. She will be out of it and back to herself soon. Wishing her a speedy recovery. I also responded to your post in the grooming section.

| Having had cataract surgery yesterday I agree about all the eye drops required. Your baby looks so sad but if she has the same results as I, the world really looks bright and clear. Thank goodness I didn't need my hair shaved, lol Good luck to you and your little one.

| Cherie Great that your baby is doing well. As you are in SoCal where did you have this done? Mine was Dr. Cindy Mar at Irvine Specialty Hospital. If so, she has a very tough post op regimen!! (But results are excellent in the end!) |
