| Periodontal Disease Hello everyone, I'm new to this forum and hoping to get some information and advice from other Yorkie owners. I just found out my 8 yr. old Yorkie has severe periodontal disease, got his blood work done and waiting to hear back for the results. If everything looks well he will have oral surgery done this Thursday first thing in the morning. I'm worried if anyone else has gone through this and if there's anything I can do for him in the mean time? He's eating and drinking water normally, but he seems weak and depressed. Which I understand why, I'm getting pretty down myself just having to wait until Thursday Please if anyone has gone through this same situation please respond to me, Thank you. I'm praying for the best! |

| Hello and welcome to YT. I, fortunately, have not had to deal with this yet. Yorkies are prone to have issues with their teeth and periodontal disease. I am thinking that your vet will be putting your little one under and will scrape the tartar off his teeth. With periodontal disease, your little one may loose a few teeth (the vet will pull any that they think need to come out). Brushing these little one's teeth is very important. If you have not yet, I would start getting your little one used to having your fingers in his mouth and try to start brushing his teeth. If that doesn't work, there are other products you can use. I give each of my pups a Dentastix at least once a day. I also use an enzymatic toothpaste on Izzy (she is our youngest and the toothpaste I got from the vet - it is CET). I use Tropiclean Fresh Breath Gel on Jack - his teeth are much worse than Izzy's and this stuff works great! There are other products that you can use and I am hoping others will chime in so they can give you some additional advice. Wishing everything goes well on Thursday and with your little one.

| Yes I have had to deal with it in one of my yorkie a who is half the age of yours. He felt a lot better after his dental and I hope your boy does too! You definitely should try to brush once he heals from the dental. Even so, he should be checked regularly by the vet.

| Thank you for the advice, and yes he'll have to be under anesthesia poor thing. The vet said he'll be losing some teeth but if he is left with a few I'll definitely look into the Tropiclean Fresh Breath Gel. I used to give him the Greenies when he was younger and those worked great! I was wondering if there are any remedies I can do for him in the mean time till surgery, he has an appointment today at 5:30 and hopefully the vet can give him some medication for the pain ): Again thank you both so much! |

Donating YT 30K Club Member | My Pixie has it and has had 3 dental cleanings. Her last one was in October. She did fine each time. She is 7 years old and has bad teeth. She has had about 10 pulled over the years. They did put her on antibiotics for 3 days before and 4 days after as a precaution for infection. Pixie was a little groggy when I picked her up but was fine by the evening and eating. Try not to stress out he will feel better afterwards. I keep him in my prayers.

| Patti- does your Yorkie have any heart issues? This is my main concern with the surgery (of course I'll be hearing the vet's opinion this evening) and I'm glad to hear Pixie did fine in her surgery, that makes me feel a little better knowing our Yorkie's are near the same age. |

| I adopted my Willow in Nov. 2010, she was 5 1/2 yrs old, she was a release from a breeder to the Rescue Group I adopted her from. I chose to take her myself and have her dental done instead of letting the Foster Mom do it. Now granted Rescue's don't normaly do this, but they knew me and I them. Her teeth were in horrible shape. She had to have 18 teeth extracted, plus she had many that had already fallen out on their own due to the dental diease. She only has a total of 5 teeth left in her mouth and I can tell you she did great with her dental. She felt much better after all those rotten teeth were removed. She is able to eat kibble (tiny bites) but she mostly eats canned food. She did so well, she only took her pain med's for 3 day's.She was on antibiotics for 14 day's. All of her blood was perfect, with the exception showing an infection which was due to her teeth. I had blood work done on her again one month after the dental and all was perfect. Prayers going out for your little one that he does great with his dental. Oh have they started him on antibiotics yet? Willow was started on antibiotics 4 day's before her dental.

I mentioned my younger dog but I also want to share with you that I have two older dogs -- both are going to be 13 years old. One of them is a higher risk for surgery and anesthesia because she has liver, intestinal, and kidney disease and also has terrible allergies. She's had her teeth cleaned and has had teeth removed. She does great! Also, my other older boy had to have surgery last year (actually three surgeries) and I was concerned that he might have a heart issue because he had a murmur detected. We took him to a cardiologist vet and did a cardiac ultrasound. If you are concerned about the heart you could do that, but it probably isn't necessary if your vet listens to the heart and it sounds good.

| None of my dogs were given antibiotics before or after dental surgery so it may depend on how severe the dental disease. They all had antibiotics run during the procedure.
