Donating YT 11K Club Member | Freaky, almost deadly day with Livie Sorry this is super long! Also, this happened last week, Thursday but haven't been able to sign on. So I've had a rough last week, Livie almost died, it was very traumatic, stressful, scary for me and for her. It just seems she has one problem after the next. Long story short I was in my room on my bed when I hear her make a 'hairball sound', you know that sound that they make when they have something in their throat and are trying to clear it or they drink water too fast. Usually it just goes away but it didn't and then i see her just pass out on the floor. I grabbed her, she was stiff. I carried her, yelled her name, stuck my finger down her throat, she was unresponsive. I did my best to give her doggy CPR, having no idea what i was doing but it worked. She woke up and looked at me. The whole time i was screaming "NOOOO Don't do this please" thinking she was dying which she would have if I wasn't there. She was still stiff and just lay there looking up. So i took her to the bed and she started to get up and kinda threw herself on me. As she did that she let out a cry, pooped herself and fell down, went stiff again, as i lf in shock. I was freaking out, afraid to move her around. She had pooped herself on my bed, i had to run get a towel but didn't want to leave her. I managed to do so and cleaned her with wipes but then she pooped herself again, diarrhea. She was acting really really strange, stiff, moving weird, noises coming from her belly. Thank God my godbrother was home, I managed to get him to drive us to the ER vet. On the way there she threw up clear stuff, kept pooping herself, gagging, going stiff, tongue turning blue, it was a nightmare, thought she was dying in my arms. I breathed a sigh of relief when we got there and said "take her now" as in please help her now! Long story short(well trying to make it short) i had to sign papers asking if its ok to do cpr on her, revive her, stabilize her etc etc, i said yes. They gave her oxygen, fluids and idk what else but she had to stay the night. I was a mess obv. I didn't even expect her to make it, they had told me she probably wasn't going to given her condition, she was gasping for air, couldn't breathe right. But she made it through the night. $2,000 later that is. (Oh nyc, just an amazing place to live) lol Still paying for that btw its been the worst! The worst is i still don't even know what happened . They said severe gastoentiritis(sp?) and possibly severe pancreatitis. All she ate was her regular food, california natural and bits of pineapple that morning. For now i've just been giving her bland rice and chicken and pepcid ac. They gave me antibiotics too but she finished taking them. Can anyone shed some light on this, give me a glimmer of hope, just an ounce please? Idk what even happened to her. Right now she is fine but they said it could occur again and i'm scared to death of that.

| Oh, how awful and I am so very sorry. However, glad she is back with you again. Hopefully, someone else can shed some light on the medical stuff, since that is way beyond anything I know about.

| Severe GE or pancreatitis shouldn't make her quit breathing. It almost sounds like she was having seizures since that can cause stiffness and incontinence. I would definately follow up with her regular vet, and quite possibly a neurologist. I know that is expensive, but a great thing about NY is that you do have so many resources available to you the people living in small towns dont have. I hope she is doing better and that you find out what caused it. The unknown is scarier because you don't know what to do to prevent it in the future. Good luck and prayers going out for Livie's health and complete recovery.

| It sounds like a nightmare. I'm so glad she seems to be doing better now. I do agree that she needs further testing. I know that does not sound inviting since you just spent $2000 trying to save her life. However, it is $2000 lost if she should start having the same symptoms again. She needs some specialized testing. It did sound like seizure activity. There are blood tests that would tell them if it was pancreas related. Could she have eaten something she was not supposed to have? Did they do X-rays of her digestive system? |

| One of our mini schnauzers passed away from being diabetic. He had pacreatis that morning and usually its a viotile vominting, just shooting out their mouth. Not a choking. I don't know but paying the money would not bother me if it saved her life but I would think they owe you a diagnois as to what happeded and what it is. So sorry you had to go through that. I know its scary. Poor baby. Hope she is feeling better. What does your regular vet say they think caused it? |

| I should have mentioned one other thing... Do check the ingredients list on Livie's food. I have read much regarding an ingredient called "Rosemary Extract" causing seizures for several years now, increasing numbers as the additive continues expansion into more and more products. Maltese have definitely been reported to have seizures as a result of consuming this ingredient. Plus there could be aspects of rosemary extract with negative impact in breeding as well. I am seeing this ingredient in a huge number pf products...from pet foods, to tarter control water additives...which I really do not understand because so far I have found nothing to indicate that rosemary is an 'enemy' of tarter. So...Why should water taste like rosemary? Oh, and avoid propylene glycol as well...search for what is happening with Purina Beneful, too.

Donating YT 30K Club Member | How scary. I would call your vet and tell them that she was eating California Natural, a dog food that has been recalled. Maybe that would shed some light on the cause. I pray she stays healthy now.

Donating YT 11K Club Member | Ok now I'm really ticked off. I had no idea about the recall. Never had problems before but we did just get a new bag, could it be? I'm worried though because she had some yesterday and this was after she finished the antibiotics.. What is she gets upset stomach again? All i've been giving her is rice and white chicken meat and chicken broth and she was fine on that but my mom told me she gave her the cal. Natural yesterday. My other dogs also eat that but they seem okay. idk what to do??! Now I'm going to return that bag and thinking about just cooking for them from now on, all these recalls, its insane! Btw i forgot to mention, the breathing thing was because of the way her neck is positioned, she has axo atlantoluxation for the person that asked, its in my previous threads. They said her gastroentitis mixed with that was causing her breathing problems. She was given antibiotics due to bacteria in her stomach so it could have been salmonella too i suppose, and the only thing she eats is the california natural food, she gets veggies/fruits as treats sometimes.

| This scared me reading it. I am so happy she is doing better. Please please please take Livie to a Neurologist or simply to a Vet School (this is what I would do) and tell them step by step what you just typed (hey, print what you typed here). Mention everything AND the recall on the food. And, throw everything out - even stuff that wasn't recalled. Get new stuff. You just can't be sure right now what caused it because you really don't have a clear diagnosis. I am going to suggest this thread be moved to sick and injured because there are others there who might be able to offer valuable advice. Prayers for Livie!

| I'm so sorry to hear this! I started this thread last week http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/gen...ites-dust.html about the recall. It's possible that salmonella poisoning could cause those symptoms. But sounds like she was also having seizures, if related, that's pretty severe. I would do a thorough neuro followup. And definitely stop that food!! To keep up with pet food recalls, sign up for these email alerts here.. Dog Food Reviews and Ratings | Dog Food Advisor

| Did the vet tell you they found a bacterial infection or were they just covering their bases? I just don't think she would have such a sudden onset of such violent symptoms without having some signs of sickness beforehand if it was food related. I would take it very slowly getting her back on dog food. Avoid anything she was eating before since you are not sure. I still suspect seizure activity but they can also be brought on by other issues. I hope you can get her to a vet school or specialist. It is just so risky not knowing for sure what happened. |
