| Bailey hurts :( Bailey has been yelping. I took him to the vet right away to make sure nothing was broken. He has a pulled muscle due to shaking toys. They put him on Tramodol but will NOT take it. I've tried crushing and putting in food, putting in a banana which is his favorite and got it compounded into beef flavor. He spits it out. He has chronic pancreatitis so I'm limited on treats. Please help me! The yelping hurts me.

| Why don't you put it down the back of his throat with your long finger? Just tilt the head back and slide it down over the hump of the back of the tongue and down the throat. Barring that, can you dissolve it in water or a bit of hot milk and use a dropper to drop it down the back of the throat? Get that poor baby his pain medicine down - if he's whining and yelping he's really in pain. I'm so sorry this happened to that sweetie. Feel sorry for you having to hear a baby hurt so. It's got to be very tough on you.

Did you get it down him anyway? Is he getting some relief yet? It drives me crazy to think of these babies in pain - poor little things. They can't talk and tell us and get immediate help - we just have to conclude things - it gets so frustrating when they are sick and you really don't know what is going on. All I can say is thank goodness for vets!

| Yes I got it in him. Thanks! I need to hear that tough support here. I feel awful. At least he's not hurting so much now.

| Awe poor guy and Momma Can they give him something in liquid form? When Georgie had surgery in 2011 he refused to take the pain meds so we had to get him a liquid and use a syringe and put it in the back of his throat. It took both my husband and I to give him the pill and he would spit it back out or refuse the food we put it in. I hope they can give you something else. Prayers for both of you.

I just try to become the nurse and think "if I don't do this, my baby won't get help - and besides, I think he trusts me and understands that I must do this". And I tell Tibbe "this will help you" and look right in his eyes and he looks back like he understands somehow. And I think they do or they would probably try to bite us or really make a run for it. Mostly though, they just sit there and wait with only minimal struggle. Somehow they must know and I KNOW they forgive. But since that baby depends on you, now is the time to go steely just long enough to do what you have to. You can do it!!! Hang in there.

| Yup, finger down throat is the best option. It also comes in a liquid but is not palatable for some dogs. BTW, banana is contraindicated for pancreatitis.

| Awe man We had to pry Georgie's mouth open to take that and basically put the syringe down his throat. They are stubborn little buggers!

| Maxie has to take a cough suppressent for Tracheal Collapse. It smells bad andmust taste pretty awful, too, as he struggles against it. But I do it -- .4 ml every six hours because... because the alternative is he might have a coughing fit and die... he's supposed to lose weight too, so I'm limited as to a treat to 'kill the taste' after the med. He's only 7# and the Dr wants him at 5.5 or 6.0 #, so the tiniest of treats blows his food budget. All this to say, I agree... BE TOUGH! They will forgive, and sometimes the best treat is a simple back rub. Maxie goes into the 'zone' when scratched up and down his wooly bully back. You'll find support here on Yorkietalk, and that's important too. |

| I gave him half the vial at 5:30. The directions say 1 ml every 8 to 12 hours. What's the earliest I can give next dose? Do I have to wait 8 hours?

| I would try to unless the dog is really yelping. If so, call that vet and see if you can fudge an hour early. Most will let you fudge near the far end of the dosage span if the dog is really in pain.
