| Please help..Milly has just been spayed.. Milly was spayed this morning, she recovered well and we brought her home around 2.30pm. She wouldn't sleep in her bed and was whimpering slightly (the vet told me small dogs tend to whimper after being spayed/neutered) so she slept on my chest for about 4 hours. She woke up around 7 and did two loose poos within about 45minutes of waking up. She has always had a super sensitive tummy and the only food she can keep down is Hills I/D wet food. She had a little bit of food when she came home and as she woke up around 7pm. Is this normal that she had loose stools? Is this because of the pain relief and antibiotics? has this happened to any of you? Also how long did it take for the wound to heal? It's heartbreaking to see her in any discomfort... She has just gone into her bed and napping now. I am thinking of calling the vet in the morning tomorrow, she has a post op check on friday.

| Sounds like her pain medicine isn't working very well. Call you vet now.

| If she has a sensitive tummy the diahrea could just be from the stress from the spay. You can give her a little canned pumpkin and it can help firm up her stools

| Yes, she's just had surgery today, of course she's in pain but it sounds like her pain medication is not working well enough. Dogs with terrible injuries on the street/in the wild sleep every day. Dogs are stoic creatures by nature often to all but acute, sudden pain and are genetically predisposed not to show pain for fear of rejection or attack. I would call the vet.

| Make sure you give her pain meds as ordered...if she still has times when she looks like she is in distress, as in panting, whining, continually repositioning and cant get comfortable, call your vet BEFORE he closes and you are maybe forking out 2x as much $$$ for an emergency vet, and ask him what is the maximum dosing of pain med you can safely give her....she seems to be in pain and you want her comfortable....he will give you a wider parameter for her dosing....then if she looks like she is hurting at say 2am, rather than getting in a panic (like I did once!!..... and rushing off to the ER because you think she has thrown a blood clot to her lungs) you can increase her dose of pain med and get her some relief. The loose stools can be from a number of things...stress, the extra fluids she got during surgery, the antibiotics or the pain med, etc....like chachi said, pumpkin will help that, if she will take it.... |

| Make sure sahe is drinking plenty of water....you may need to syringe some intoher mouth...her urinary output will drop off is she is getting dehydrated or if she isnt drinking enough water...she needs fluids much more than she needs to eat at this stage of the game....if she will drink a little chicken broth, or pedialyte or even a little jello water....I will dissolve jello in pedialyte.....they get enough fluid that way, and they get some sugar to keep the glucose level up.... |

| Called the emergency vet while ago and they said loose stools could be due to antibiotics especially as she has a sensitive belly and should settle by morning. She has had a wee at last and no loose stools since around 7.30pm - thankgod. She is not whining...but I will monitor her tomorrow morning too...ahhh it's nerve wrecking waiting for her to get better...

| When Columbo was neutered, he had urgent diarrhea the first day. He felt poorly for a couple days before he started feeling better, but then he was fine. I just really babied him during his recovery period. |

| I hope your little one is feeling better.... just for the record... the initial whining was most likely from the anesthesia. When dogs come out of surgery, when they first begin to really wake up, they will whine and even howl. Then after about an hour or so they will whine a bit then sleep on and off as the anesthesia gets processed out of their system. Some pups may act a bit loopy for up to two days after a surgery. Don't trust her around stairs or furniture for the first few days, till you know for sure she's okay and thinking clearly.
